Question - Fibrocystic Breasts Cured After Hysterectomy? Fibrocystic Breasts Cured After Hysterectomy?

Hi everyone.

Something very unusual happened to me. I have spent almost 20 years dealing with my Fibrocystic breasts. It actually runs in my family on my mother's side (Mother, Aunt, Grandma, Great Grandma, etc). As far as we know, all women on her side have had it.

My last mammogram 2 years ago was troublesome because they couldn't get a good picture due to all the fibroid cysts. My breasts were very swollen, lumpy, and hard. As painful as they can be, I always enjoyed the "perk" of not having droopy flat breasts. I am 38 and my breasts still looked like they were when I was 18. But the fact the shape of my breasts was created with hard lumpy cysts, was not fun. Needless to say, squishing them like pancakes is almost impossible! So they ordered a 3D mammogram, which was able to show me that my breasts are almost completely made up of fibroid cysts. The lady who assisted with the test said she never had seen anything like it. She told me I should be thankful for those cysts because without them... I wouldn't have much left! I already knew this, but it was relieving to have it confirmed and know they are not cancerous.

I had a radical hysterectomy in September this year due to cervical cancer. Everything removed except the ovaries. The following day upon dressing to leave the hospital, I realized my top half wasn't feeling normal. My breasts were deflated, super soft & squishy. Instead of my normal lumpy hard perkiness, my breasts were much smaller, flatter, and actually had movement. I yelled for my mom and husband to come look (& feel ). They both laughed and said that was what breasts were actually supposed to feel like. Although we were all shocked because like me, they knew my breast history- what my breasts looked and felt like almost my entire life. This was literally a dramatic overnight change. Upon examination, we couldn't find any lumps. Everything is soft & squishy. No pain either.

I brought this up to both my surgeon and general doctor. Both of them didn't have an explanation for it. They both found it very unusual and could only say it may have been due to a dramatic change in hormones due to the hysterectomy. Otherwise, they couldn't explain it and never had experienced a similar case.

Am I the only one? Is this unheard of? I'm not complaining because it's actually nice to not have constant painfully hard swollen lumpy breasts. But they feel foreign to me. The change was so dramatic, it scared me a little. If anyone has seen any research on this, please let me know. I would be curious to read up on it. Thanks!
