2 days past hysterectomy - thick brown discharge

I read that thin brown, red or pink discharge is normal, but what about a teaspoon of thick brown discharge? Could that be a blood clot? Does it sound like normal or something I need to call my dr about?

Re: 2 days past hysterectomy - thick brown discharge

At 3 days post-op, that sounds normal. The general guideline is if you're filling a maxi-pad in an hour, that's an emergency situation. Also reportable to your doctor are gushes of blood or any fluid, passing clots larger than a quarter, or a fishy smelling discharge. A clot would be similar to the clots you may have passed during your menstrual cycle with defined edges. The way you describe yours doesn't seem to fit - it sounds like a thicker blood-tinged discharge. Your vaginal tissues secrete fluids to keep them moist, and that can be thicker. A good guide to tell you what's normal and what should be phoned in or checked out is Vaginal Discharge After Hysterectomy.

I'd like to invite you to connect with your Recovery Thread for women who had surgery the same week as you at Recovery Progress Reports for Sep 21-27. Recovery Threads are wonderful for getting support, comparing notes, encouraging others, and keeping one another company.

I’d recommend you get familiar with your post op discharge papers, it should mention when to contact your doctor, including “bleeding”

Spotting/bleeding can happen on/off for several weeks post op, including variation of blood color.

I read my discharge papers, thank you. My concern isn’t that I was bleeding, but the fact that the discharge was basically solid. The discharge papers only discuss color, not texture. And I searched the forums here before posting.

Re: 2 days past hysterectomy - thick brown discharge

The day after mine, it seemed like some blood (but was dark and not a huge amount) had been trapped inside and Decided to exit (oh joy) perhaps it’s somewhat similar? How do you feel overall, anything feeling worse or more discharge since? Big chance it’s just your body naturally expelling .

That sounds normal to me. I had a blood clot that was pretty big but it was red. The brown globs sound like normal healing.
