HRT - What to take?

It is approaching 6 years since I had my hysterectomy. My doctor left my ovaries and last year, she started removing me from the Estrodiol. Now I am out and things are pretty ugly. I've gained a crap ton of weight, no real energy, hot flashes so hot that my glasses steam up. Emotionally, I am holding but a little down.

Tried taking black cohosh, but doesn't seem to work. Can anyone provide suggestions on what I should do?

Thank you

Re: HRT - What to take?

Why has your doctor stopped with the estradiol? My doctor started me on it yesterday and said that 10 years is about the length of time that it is safe to take.

I am also reading books on hormonal balance by Dr Sara Gottfried. She is a Harvard educated Gyn who is a leader in hormonal balance. She tries to work thru lifestyle factors but also recommends HRT when needed. She is well worth reading to shed some light on how to start moving down this road.

Re: HRT - What to take?

I went through natural menopause 2 years ago, and I've been relatively symptom-free without HRT thanks to regular consumption of plant estrogens from soy; if you have no issues with it, just 2-3 daily servings of organic tofu, edamame, or soy milk can help with hormonal balance, or you can ask your doctor or pharmacist about taking one of the many soy-based supplements on the market. For the weight gain, here's a summary of recommendations I've made to other sisters: keep a food diary, and be sure to include all those BLTs - bites, licks and tastes; fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables, the remainder with a serving of carbs about the size of your cupped hand, and a palm-sized serving of protein; focus on low-glycemic carbs from most fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, which can also help to provide a more steady supply of energy, as opposed to the "spike and crash" cycle typically caused by high-glycemic foods; cook and cool high-carb foods to create resistant starch, which is more likely to be eliminated in your poop than stored as fat; add in regular moderate servings of MUFAs - monounsaturated fatty acids from avocados, nuts and seeds, and olive oil; check YouTube or other online platforms for strength training workouts that utilize your own weight or ordinary household objects. Best wishes for finding your balamce soon!

Re: HRT - What to take?

Thanks Tiger Eye! My doctor put me on the 2nd lowest dose and ideally I'd like to not have to use any HRT. The hot flashes and waking up at night seems to have hugely increased for me in the last couple of weeks so I'm getting very focused on diet and I've resumed working out so hopefully it makes a difference soon.
