Is weight loss worth the wait?
Hi,
I was overweight (just a little) one year ago when my doctor told me my uterus was the size of a 16-week pregnancy. She didn't push for surgery, because I have no pain, and I didn't notice the extra belly size, since I was fat all over. Instead, when I requested help for the weight problem, she referred me to a certified dietician so that I could address my weight issue. She warned me that it wouldn't be covered by insurance, but I didn't care about that. It cost me $99 and was worth much more than that. I became more healthy within four days of beginning the new diet, and after one year I had lost 29 pounds. It takes a long time to lose weight. During that year I gave careful thought to my need for surgery, and after I got down to a comfortable size 10 and still could barely button my pants, I decided the belly had to go. I'm ready for surgery now. I tell you this because I think ordering a person to lose weight is useless. If you can't wait for the miracle of weight loss, then shouldn't you go forward with the surgery, deal with the complications as best you can, and don't look back? That's what second opinions are FOR, after all. That's just my opinion. Your doctor, the one who understands you and is willing to work with you the way you are, is a dear. You have a choice about surgery. You don't really have that much choice about weight loss. Good luck to you.

re fat and needing surgery
I am 5' 11" and 274 pounds when I went into surgery. My Doctor said that being obese presents some problems in healing as when you are carrying a lot of belly fat you could have some infection in the wound area.
I think the big problem is will you be able to move post operatively since this is really important to recovery. If you have an opportunity to lose weight before surgery, do it every little bit helps.
I went to the gym and even though I didn't do any abdominal work, the upper body work out really helped and I did manage to lose over 10 pounds in a month.
Post op for me was very easy, I was up and walking the first day and able to move around in bed much easier.
Good luck to you.

Fat and Hysterectomy
Hi, I've always been very active, but for the past five years the weight crept on, just on and around my belly and now I am real "fluffy" (5'8", 230). I really think it was hormonal and related to the problems I'm having now. Until I started to bleed six months ago I remained active, walking four miles three days a week and riding my bicycle about fifty to 100 miles a week including a century last summer on my antique single speed bicycle from 1897. But since September I have hemorraged every time I exercised, so I am absolutely a slug. Luckily, I haven't gained any more weight. When I found out a hyster was basically the only answer for me my doctor didn't say anything about my size, but my (always supportive) mother said, "Are you sure they can do it when you're so fat?' (Exact quote) So I asked my doc, and she was insulted that I questioned her skill. She said that the risk I have beyond a thin person is wound infection from my belly drooping over the incision and the additional thickness of the wound, but that she can and has done hysters on people much larger than me and they have gone perfectly. She is kind of stuck up about her skill, but from everything I see and hear she deserves to be, and her bedside manner is fantastic for me. So, I say, if you need a hyster, shop around until you find a doctor who is confident about operating on you and all should go well. We'll find out with me tomorrow.

Fat and Hysterectomy
Hi Nlea - Ok being overweight is not healthy... this we know. As for the surgery.... I had a bikini cut. As funny to me as it was (since there is no chance of me EVER wearing a bikini) It was helpful. The incision was UNDER my roll of fluffiness. I am over 300 lbs and very heavy in the stomach area. All was fine. NO infection... just as long as you keep it clean & dry..... VERY IMPORTANT.
PLease feel free to send me a private message if you have any questions.

Fat and Hysterectomy
Let me add to this chorus. I'm 5'*', about 250. When my doc told me I'd have a bikini cut (yeah, like I'll ever be in a bikini) I asked her point-blank, "There's a lot of me there. Are you sure that's do-able?" She just looked at me like she didn't understand the question, then shrugged it off. No prob, don't worry. I have a bkini cut, and it was NOT hidden under my belly, but a little higher, so I didn't even have to worry about the keep-it-dry thing. I healed better than many, had textbook surgery as well. Thursday, in fact, I go for node disection with a doctor who also said my size was no problem (after a consult with one who said I was "too chubby" for surgery. ) I guess what I'm telling you is that it's all in your doctor's skill, and a lot in whether they buy into all the anti-fat social stuff. I have even read the occasional study that indicates larger people heal better than others.
Good luck with your surgery!

Well, my fluff didn't get in the way!
I'm back home after my surgery and NO problem from my belly size. The surgery took three hours instead of the one that they thought it would but it was because of the size and bogginess of my uterus, nothing to do with fat. They had to do an up and down incision instead of a bikini cut, right through the deepest fat, but it is healing completely cleanly, no infection and really the pain is not bad. The worst pain I had was my tail bone from the bed and chair at the hospital and that is clearing up now that I am home and have my own stuff. My doctor was confident about operating on me at my size and she was right! She says I'll have to wear a tankini when I go to the beach because she couldn't give me a bikini cut. We'll see, maybe I can lose weight now that I can exercise again. Good luck to all. Don't worry about fluff!
