Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

I am in Calgary, and only waited 3 months...
18 months seems excessive to me...but! I am also the only one I know going through this and don't have any friends in the post hyster stage of life to know if you are the norm, or if I am.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

I am in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and only had to wait 2 months...
But i do have a friend here in Ottawa that was told by her Doctor it was also an 18 month wait so I think it all depends on who your doctor is.
And alot of the time its that the doctors can't get the O.R time, or so I was told.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

Once I made the decision, it was one month here in Thunder Bay. My doctor put me down as a "priority" due to the size of my fibroids. "Urgent" mean they schedule right away, "priority" means a very short wait such as less than 3 months and "elective" means a very long wait. You need to ask your doctors as to what kind of category they put you in.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

My doctor is saying 4-5 months to get a date, they didn't say how long after that the surgery would actually be. I'm in Vancouver. However, I have another appointment in 1 week and depending on what he sees things may speed up. I HOPE things speed up.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

I am in Calgary and had my surgery Jan 25/11. I had the TAH because of endometrial cancer. From the time I had my internal ultrasound to surgery it was 5 months to surgery and in between the time, I had to wait to see a specialist, go into the hospital for a biopsy, meet with the doctor at the Tom Baker Cancer clinic and other doctors at the Foothills. From the time of confirmed diagnosis to surgery it was 2.5 months before the surgery.

A friend of mine who did not have cancer but had very bad fibroids had about a shorter wait once it was decided; however, it took a long time to get in to that point.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

Hi trinket - 18 months sounds very excessive, and I agree with Appledumpling that this is likely more about OR time than anything. Given that you have the time, I would highly recommend that you consider getting another referral/consult with another Gyn/surgeon who can very likely access OR time on a quicker timeline.

Sometimes it can be a matter of the most skilled surgeons (skilled in a particular procedure |I mean) having the longest wait times. But 18 months is significantly longer than any I have heard of (in BC).

Hang in there and keep on searching for answers and options the way you are! Trust your instincts.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

When my doctor made the decision that this was the best possible choice, he told me it was a 9 month waiting list, and I thought that was long.
Surgery was originally planned for September 2011, I then got a call for June 10, then April 20, and the last date given was March 29. Surgery to be done in Edmonton. Hopefullly you have heard more and have been given a better wait time.

Re: please comment on Alberta Wait Times...

I was told my doc's wait time is 12 months in St. Albert, but he wants mine done before 5 months, because he is concerned that the cervical cancer can progress to a higher stage. I am also on the wait/priority list so I could get a call any day to come in sooner.
