Welcome to The Other Side, Princesses !

This is your Recovery Thread, where youíll be able to share your progress and laugh and cry together as you support one another along the way. I'll be walking alongside you in your recovery journey, sharing my own experiences and pointing you to resources we have here.

Healing is your #1 priority. This was major surgery and healing takes place inside as well as outside. Youíre still your doctorís patient until youíre released, and even then, healing will continue.

Get plenty of rest
Drink plenty of water
Take your meds as directed
Walk as you are able (for now, from your cozy recovery spot to the bathroom or kitchen)

There will be things you cannot and must not do at first , you may experience gas, bowel issues, aches and pains, and your emotions might swing at the drop of a hankie.

And when youíre confused , itís okay to ask questions, and we welcome you to discuss whatever is on your mind. You are not alone!

For now, rest Ė and rest well!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 15-Feb 21,2021

Had my surgery yesterday 2/16. Robotic assisted laparoscopic total hysterectomy with both ovaries removed. It was outpatient, so got home around 5 pm. Around 6, I got super nauseous and started throwing up. Husband called doc and he called in an oral zofran script and that seemed to help. Iíve taken two doses so far. Pain and soreness are tolerable so far. I have decided to stay on the narcotic pain meds to avoid too much pain and will probably see how I feel later today with just Advil.
Iím a little concerned about constipation. Two days before surgery I started taking Mirolax so my bowels would be ďmore out of the wayĒ during surgery, but ended up never even going, so I basically did the exact opposite!
Took some more last night and have been drinking quite a bit of water. Because I had an episode of nausea and vomiting, I havenít been able to drink as much as I would. (About 2 liters in the last 12 hours).
Also have only eaten a couple crackers with each time I take pain meds. Moving around as much as possible, but just around the house, bathroom, kitchen...
Hopefully this will be a quick recovery, but looking forward to a couple of days of binge watching amd reading with no guilt

Unhappy - Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 15-Feb 21,2021 Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 15-Feb 21,2021

Hello
I had a TVH with repairs yesterday the 16th. I was sent home same day with a catheter. I was extremely nauseous and threw up several times in recovery, on the drive home and at home. Today has been better. Pain is better today also. I set an alarm to wake me so that I didnít miss a dose. I will need to take a drive to my doctorís on Friday to remove the catheter and itís giving me anxiety. Itís at least a 40 min ride one way. Bad roads and nausea

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 15-Feb 21,2021

Hello,
I had my hysterectomy today, 2/17/21. Full hysterectomy, both ovaries, robot assisted laparoscopic, and checked my bladder with scope. Iím outpatient, but itís an overnight stay, no longer than 23 hours total unless problems occur.

So far pain hasnít been bad, I have 5 incision marks with stitches, just the gas is pretty rough. Doctor left my catheter in so I could rest instead of going to the bathroom all night. I do have a slight fever thatís increasing, started at 99.5 @7:30pm and is up to 99.8 when it was taken at 11:45pm, and I tend to run 97s, so itís a fever for me. The staff is amazing though and keeping a close eye on it!

So happy to have this community!

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 15-Feb 21,2021

Hi my name is Jennifer and I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy and kept my ovaries yesterday the 17th. Mine was outpatient and was home by late afternoon. I have a pretty severe allergy and Bc of this my anesthesiologist didnít want to use as much pain medicine. This lead to not being ahead of my pain. Iíve been trying to play catch up since waking up from surgery. Iím finally able to say that the pain is manageable at this point. But itís taken setting an alarm for every 2 hours to rotate between Motrin 800 mg and the pain medicine. I started my stool softener as soon as I got home and hoping that taking it twice a day will make it easier to go when time. My hospital filled my bladder with saline before removing the catheter and I had to be able to pee on my own prior to leaving. First time peeing I got so nauseous and changed colors that the nurse got orders for Phenergan (sp?) to be given IV. It worked great and I also got some much needed rest. The only other thing Iíve noticed post op is I feel like Iím tired, try to sleep but only sleep in spurts. Fingers crossed that day 2 continues to roll smoothly.

Christinaof6, SBTB, Nguyton.09 and Jennduvall82! I'm glad y'all have found your Recovery Thread already!

Christina and SBTB, you're not alone in experiencing nausea after surgery. Often it's the anesthesia, but the surgery, meds and any bowel prep or liquid diet we had beforehand give our GI tract a LOT of grief. Ginger is a good bet for an upset stomach - tea, ginger ale, ginger chews. I even have a Chinese supplement with ginger which bro-in-law supplied to us years ago. Small meals and grazing is often better, or drinking your meals - I relied on smoothies with protein powder, and bland steamed veggies since my appetite was off.

Nguyton, a low grade fever is common after surgery. Your body is working overtime to flush out impurities, clean the massive surgical areas internally, stave off infection and bring the necessary "supplies" to the internal wounds to bind and build them. Yep, just keep your eye on it. My temp tends to run in the 97s, too, yet the standard caution flag is still 101ļ.

Jennduvall, most of us are prescribed both a narcotic or similar pain med with prescription strength ibuprofen. Once you're off of or out of the stronger med, alternating acetaminophen with ibuprofen is usually a good bet.

As I walk beside you through recovery, I'll read every single post and try to post resources to meet you where you are. These are good ones to get you started:It can take 3-7 days to have that first bowel movement. Our systems are often sluggish due to surgery, pain meds, and our appetites being off, plus any pre-op bowel emptying or bowel prep may also contribute. Choose foods high in fiber and magnesium: dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fruits (dried, fresh or frozen in smoothies), yogurt, whole grains including high fiber cereals, avocados, prune juice and enough water-water-water to swamp a canoe. Without the fluids you're making rocks, and rocks don't flow smoothly. Walking helps, and also, use a low footstool to prop your feet when you're on the throne. We're actually built to squat, not sit, and getting your knees above the hips aligns the body properly for emptying.

Laparoscopic on the 16th, uterus, tubes, cervix. Surgery at 7:30 am home my 1:30
I feel like they couldnít get me out of there fast enough. I peed just fine and was thirsty and was drinking ice water, was put on oxygen as Shebsaid when I would doze off, my oxygen fell quite a bit. They also gave me fentanyl in recovery, but I donít remember being in any pain.I donít remember even going home. I was very restless and was still awake at 1am, and delusional. I thought I still had yet to have my surgery, was repeatedly calling my poor friend and telling the same story. And I couldnít read! Words looked like a total foreign language. My doctor was on call and and returned my call immediately. Apparently the patch for nausea behind my ear has some pretty crazy side effects, scapalimine or something.. Took it off and eventually fell asleep. Woke next day to unbelievable gas pain. Like an alien or cannon ball was tumbling around that at times was actually visibly pushing through my sides (kinda like when a baby would kick, but so much bigger) The shoulder and beneath my ribs, miserable! I tried to take Advil and one oxy but neither touch the gas pain. Taking mylanta and lots of HOT peppermint tea. Still seems to be a lot still in there. Also a terrible tension headache that I suffer from isnít making things easier.
My vision is better but not back to previous level. Had a bowel movement this morning and it slipped right out! Was worried, didnít take softeners or anything. Maybe because I have not been taking the pain medicine. I feel like I should at least take Advil, but I have such an aversion to medicine.
The odd pain thing is itís not in my abdomen or where the laparoscopy incisions are, itís in my groins, both legs, and extends down my inner thighs. It comes and goes, was intense at times yesterday.
Iím just in bed and donít feel strong enough to do anything but walk to the kitchen and bathroom, briefly.
I feel just generally blah.

I totally get the pain in the groin area and upper thighs. Feels more like an intense work out or really bad period cramping. So sorry they rushed you out the door. My hospital lets hysterectomy patients tell them when they are ready to leave. My surgery was at 7:30 am. Was out of surgery at 9 am but I didn’t leave recovery headed home until 4. Hope you start feeling better soon. I know I feel much better by staying ahead of the pain taking my meds.

Jennifer
