What scares you the most about surgery?
My biggest fear before surgery was pain because I have a history of adverse reactions to pain medication. I actually for 24 hours straight following my surgery. This was probably worse for my husband than for me as I was mostly not aware of what was going on. It was like being in a dream. They finally took me off of all narcotics, and found an anti-nausea medicine that worked. Here's the surprising thing, and the reason I'm responding to the post. Even on no pain medication, the pain I experienced from a TAH was only SLIGHTLY more than the pain I had been living with for the past 2 years. I had no idea how much pain I had actually been in. The pain in my lower back, in my groin and in my legs was immediately gone. I am now managing my pain from surgery with Advil, and doing very well.

Gravelgertie, I'm so sorry you're having to face such a scary situation! But please take comfort in knowing that even if it is cancer, the survival rate for uterine cancer is very high, so most likely your propnosis would still be very good.

What scares you the most about surgery?
Hi Meatball,
I don't want to scare anyone, but I heard recently from a woman who already had a hysterectomy a while back, that she experienced "horrendous pain" & doesn't remember if it was "during" or after surgery! I can understand experiencing a lot of pain upon awakening "post op", but to think it was "during" surgery makes me scared to the point of being sick! Does anyone know if this ever happens for real? I don't know why she had to tell me this "bit of news" now!!! Sorry if I scared anyone....maybe she was so out of it post op that she doesn't remember anything but "the pain"!

What scares you the most about surgery?
I am terrified of just one thing-not waking up after my general. I went into anaphylaxic shock and stopped breathing during abdominal surgery 26 years ago. But I know things have changed a lot since then and I'm trying to focus on how much better my life will be afterwards.
best to everyone!

I've not heard of any stories like that. Maybe on "Phil" or "Oprah"! Not here. I've heard that they put you"deep" under, so I really don't see how that could happen. Although, I've had 3 surgeries before and I know I don't have a problem with general anesthesia. I'm sure they have ways to ensure you are totally "out". She must have awoken in the OR after they were done, but before pain meds, before going into recovery. Don't listen to stories like that.

What scares you the most about surgery?
One of my biggest fears is the same as many of yours--not waking up. I have had to have had several surgeries in the past where I was put under. The feeling of going "under" is one of the scariest sensations I have ever known. It's a feeling of losing comlete control, and knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. I, too, fear not being able to get my flat belly back again. I have worked so hard to get into the shape I am in, and am so afraid that this will bounce me back to where I was. Not being able to work out for about 6 weeks is going to be horrible. The whole swelly belly thing is not something I look forward to. I have a very formal occassion that I am planning to go to 2 weeks post -op, and the swelly belly thing is going to seriously get in the way!!! I am not afraid of the pain- they have meds for that. My family will help out around the house, friends will help with meals, but getting back to my independent self will take some patience on my part. I am afraid I will not be able to get back to work as soon as i would like. I am planning of 4 weeks. Those are my greatest fears- the ones I think about most often. Fortunaltely, I have talked to quite a few freinds who have had the surgery and every one of the m is glaf they had it done. So I know that in the end- I will be too.

What scares you the most about surgery?
I know.....I hate the feeling of going "out". Last time I felt like I was being pulled right through the table to the floor. As I couldn't open my eyes anymore because they felt all "googly like they were going to fall out of my head", I could not breathe, and felt very heavy! I told them that and I got oxygen, I presume. Not to scare anyone, but it IS reality. Everything was okay though of course. Me too....on the excercise. Maybe we have to focus on what we eat till we can resume excercise. I'm hoping that I can do cardio soon after though. Maybe that's naive. you may not have the swelly belly too much if you're in shape? Who knows?

What scares you the most about surgery?
I saw a doctor on TV recently talking about 1 or 2 people out of every 1000 wake up during surgery. He said almost all the cases involved car accidents or violent injuries with a lot of blood loss prior to surgery. This had been my biggest fear but know that I understand the odds, I feel better.
My fears are not being able to control my emotions and controling the pain. I also have some neurlogical problems that I know will show back up after surgery. Sometimes I have trouble walking, although I have been doing very well for the last couple of years. My symptoms look like MS but have had three MRI's over the last 8 years and they say it is not MS and can't find anything wrong. The trama of the surgery is sure to bring on another episode and I am scared of falling. I know I will grow tired of explaning it to nursing staff. I am thinking about writting it out and giving it to the staff and having an extra supply of the write up to share with dumb staff that do not read charts. When I am in pain, I sometimes have trouble finding my words. Not sure if that is also nerological. My Doc is aware of the walking problem.
