Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 25-Jan 31,2021

My surgery was Jan 27. I stayed until Friday. Due to the size of my fibroids I had to be opened up. Boy has this been an experience. I just started sleeping in my bed again. It was just too hard to get into it. The pain is finally starting to subside. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and this knocked me on my butt! I am still using Tylenol and Motrin but mainly at night. Today has been my best day so far. My doc said the incision looks great when I went last week. Also said I could return to work March 1st. I know the students I work with miss me. Tomorrow will be the first day I will be alone all day if the husband goes into work. I assured him I would be fine.

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 25-Jan 31,2021

Hey everyone,

I hope I'm posting in the correct area. My surgery was performed on January 29. I had to be at the hospital at by 5:45 A.M. I am a more difficult case because of my weight. I had robot assisted laproscopic surgery. The surgeon removed my tubes and uterus. Which was quite large. Now, Im fighting a bad infection. It could have made me very sick had not there been the bursting that happened. It allowed for the infection to start flowing from my body.
Before the " bursting", I was having hot flashes and chills. I called the surgeons office 2/14 at about 9:30 P.M. and was told it was normal and to call the office the next day to see the DR.
My eyes are blood shot red and have been this way for about a week. Im afraid..... Im not posting to scare anyone but please pay attention to your body's.

Panic as my discomfort increases. Did I injure myself? Did I overdo it?
I haven't taken pain meds since I came home and did fine but there's a heaviness and soreness at the old c section scar from a year ago. It feels the worst when I stand at 21 days and the doctors office is closed. Anyone else experience this? How do you know?

I don't know if what I've had is the same thing but I get this wildly uncomfortable off-and-on pain over the top of my right hip (iliac crest according to the anatomy chart) and I have NO idea why!

I don't think I'm overdoing it but...how would I know?

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 25-Jan 31,2021

Tomorrow marks 3 weeks out! I started driving again this week. Seems ok.
I haven't taken anything for pain in the last few days, before that I was just taking tylenol.
I feel ok. I get a few sharper pains here and there but they subside quickly. I do feel like there's more pain whenever I have to have a BM in the bathroom but I just assume my body is still getting used to things.
It's hard not to lift things that are heavier and avoid that stuff (especially because we are getting ready to sell our house).
I do feel a bit tired in the afternoon. I'm working from home so every few hours I will just go lay on the couch with a heating pad for a bit. That seems to help!

Hopefully everyone is healing up nicely!

I don't know. I'm not sure how I can avoid lifting my 9 month old. I don't know what is the line that will reverse all of the repair work. I'm pretty worried.

I'm sorry to hear this. I can tell you're worried. If you can and aren't having emergency symptoms (see your doc's written instructions, etc.), then I would try to rest and take it easier for a couple of days.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 25-Jan 31,2021

Here's some advice on the too much too soon....

Regardless of how many external stitches or staples you have, any type of hysterectomy involves a number—possibly hundreds—of internal stitches. It is this internal healing that can take anywhere from six months to a year to be complete.

If you strain yourself too soon, you risk tearing some of your stitches. (This is rare and you are more likely to just pull/irritate the healing sites) This is one of the worst setbacks that can happen. There are women who had to go back to the hospital for surgery.

When your tissues are healing, they are very sensitive to being pulled and squeezed. Scar tissue wants to form wherever there are internal incisions, and if there is even a tiny amount of bleeding inside it can 'stick' areas together that shouldn't be stuck together. As a result bridges of scar tissue called adhesions can form between organs or tissues that should not normally be connected.

In some rarer cases, these adhesions can grow over time until they occupy large areas of the pelvis and connect some or all of the organs there. Occasionally, they can even grow nerves and their own blood supply. As a result, every movement pulls on something it shouldn't, causing intense pain.

Strong, sudden movements can cause little tiny tears in the tissue that will promote adhesion formation, whereas slow, fluid movements keep things loose and free. Walking is great, as is slow swimming after your doctor has cleared you to be submerged in water (usually at the six-week mark).

An abdominal binder can help you as you are more active during your hysterectomy recovery. Or you might want to consider trying a support panty like the post op panty for gentle support to your tender abdominal muscles.

You only get one chance to heal properly, so it's up to you to make the most of it! Look at it this way: you and your surgeon are partners. Your surgeon's part was to do the very best job s/he could do in the operating room. Now your part is to make sure you don't undo all that good work. In order for you to have the best possible outcome, you BOTH have to do your parts!

But, also, I know that life gets in the way of perfect rest. You do your best and trust your body.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jan 25-Jan 31,2021

I'm trying to figure out how much discomfort is normal at 3 weeks (my surgery was 1/28). I mean, I can do things and appear normal, plus I don't have awful pain, but there is always discomfort of some sort in my pelvic area (and quite a lot around one hip, but I've moaned before about that one to you).

I just wonder what is "normal"? I can be almost normal if I take enough acetaminophen and ibuprofen but without it, I'm pretty ouchy! Definitely preferring my jogging pants to even my loosest jeans!
