Getting Nervous

So Last Thursday January 9th I was told I will be having a complete hysterectomy before the 31st. I'm a little nervous about what to expect. I have had two C sections, but I was much younger and am worried that now that I am 56 I will not recover as quickly. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Re: Getting Nervous

I am having a hysterectomy in a week, and my doctors have all assured me that recovery is a lot easier if you are doing the robotic or laparoscopy types of surgery. So here's to hoping they are right. Good luck with your recovery.

Re: Getting Nervous

Good luck! I have been told the recovery for a laparoscopic or robotic is much easier than a c-section!

Re: Getting Nervous

Hi Debbie Doodle to HysterSisters!

All of your nerves, fears, emotions, and concerns are very normal. You are not alone, and we are here to help and support your.

Here is an article that discusses the comparison between C-Sections and Hysterectomies:
Abdominal Hysterectomy vs. C-Section

I understand your concern about being older. Everyone's recovery is different, and it is hard to predict what recovery will be like. In general, though, you should think in terms of weeks and not days. You will also need help at home with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. And you will need to take time off work. How long depends on how fast you recover, your job demands, and other factors. Resting will be very important - as well as frequent, but brief walks. Keep in mind that you only get one chance to heal right.

You may want to review our pre-op page for more information. And you can click on the "Hysterectomy Check Points" at the top of the page.
