Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
Good evening ladies! I am scheduled for a laparoscopic TAH next Friday at 7:30am. My doctor, who I have complete trust in, thinks it may be very possible that I can go home the night of my surgery. She seems to believe that because of my age(39) and because I'm relatively healthy (other than what is hopefully an early stage of endometrial cancer....argh!) I should recover pretty quickly. She has stressed that she would never discharge me if I do turn out to have nausea, clotting, etc.
Has anyone ever been discharged so quickly? I was excited to hear her recommendation at first, but my family and friends seem to think its a horrible idea. I live about five minutes from the hospital so I'm fortunate to be close if anything were to go wrong once I'm home. Just curious to hear what others may think.....thanks so much!

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
Since I am on my own, and my surgery was not until 2, i stayed one night. Many on here state they left same day. However you have to be able to pee and walk around, and should always consider there may be unexpectedness .. Some like being able to recover with professional nursing around them, away from family, children or other. Some want to get home as soon as possible. Some have no choice because of insurance. I would plan on what your doctor states IF you are comfortable going home the same day .. Just realise things may change.

Walking around was not a problem. I was unable to urinate until 5 the next morning. I was also a 7:30 case.

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
Insurance wants me home the same day and I freaked out over it. I see the Dr. tomorrow for my pre-op and I am going to stress that I want to stay at least 1 night. I'm not honest with the people around me, but since this is virtual I can be more honest here, going home the same day scares me more that I can say. I'm not scared about any other part of this surgery. Just thinking about going home the same day and I start to panic. It's nice that you're Dr. has already assured you that she won't send you home unless you are ready.

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
Thank you so much, everyone. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. She had mentioned the early discharge the same day she told me about the cancer, so I don't think she had time to look into my insurance. I'm pretty lucky to have decent insurance compared to others who are forced to go home way too early. I think she thought it would be a positive thing, so I'll just see how I feel later that say. Again, thank you for sharing your experiences. Everyone is so helpful....

Oh, thanks so much, alsohere. I'm so glad to hear that. My doctor seemed so confident about it and it helps,to hear that others have received the same expectations. Thank you again.

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
My surgery was scheduled for 7:30 am, I was discharged at 3pm. For that to be possible, I had to be able to urinate and hold down food so I could take meds. I was given the option to stay, but knew I'd be so much more comfortable at home, with my bed and pillow, no roommate and no IV or monitoring devices.

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
I could have, but glad I didn't. Pain management is much better at the hospital. Plus, my hospital had really good food. Lol
It was meant to be for me to stay the night. My hubby had worked 12 hours the night before my surgery, so he was able to get some sleep since my doctor forgot to put my discharge orders on the computer before she left the hospital.

Re: Anyone discharged same day as surgery?
Thank you both, and I hope you are both feeling well. I've only ever been in the hospital for one night, and I was going stir crazy by the next afternoon, but I can also see the huge benefits in staying for monitoring and pain management. Think ill just see how the surgery goes and will hope for the best, but also be realistic about what I can tolerate alone. Again, many thanks for everyone's help. This board has been great. Off to buy granny pants and cute, comfortable black sweats tomorrow!
