Upcoming hysterectomy 7/2: Pre surgery nerves

So I went to my pre op today and got my time for July 2 ... ugh I had a million things running threw my head... I’ve got my pre surgery chore list started... and pretty much everything else set ... I still have all these what ifs running around in my head and I’m still 4 days away ... trying to get threw the jitters... my doc was talking about doing a spinal as part of my anesthesia not sure how I feel about that .. she kept saying that if she were in my shoes that’s the way she would go ... but that requires a catheter and an over night stay at the hospital... I know I want to be home for my kids but the extra day stay could be good ... and has anyone had a TAP block done as part of their anesthesia.. that was another possibility instead of the spinal ... and suggestions or tips thank you all ladies

Re: Pre surgery nerves

Well whether or not you have a spinal, you will most likely have a catheter. With my davinci, I had general anesthesia and I am pretty sure that’s how most of them go. As far as having a spinal what are the thoughts behind that? Is she concerned about pain afterwards or something else? I came out of the OR with diluadid but didn’t need it at all. Davinci is an outpatient surgery and some do go home the same day, but some surgeons keeps you for 23 hours, which would be overnight. Good luck!!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 7/2: Pre surgery nerves

Hi Bethanimal8779 -

I had a TAH BSO - 6 inch vertical incision. I had general anesthetic and an epidural. My anesthesiologist recommended this combination. She said she could use less anesthetic that way and I would wake up quicker. I liked the sound of that. I would do this combination again in a heartbeat.

They administered pain meds - morphine pain pump - through the tubing after I woke up from surgery. Yes, I did have a catheter, but I actually think that is fairly typical for most surgeries. The catheter was left in until the next day, when they removed epidural. I was then switched to oral pain meds. I was in the hospital for a total of 3 1/2 days.

Here are articles that may help:
Anesthesia | Spinal vs. Epidural
Anesthesia | Sedation vs. General Anesthesia

Make the decision that is right for you.

Upcoming hysterectomy 7/2: Pre surgery nerves

Her worries are that I have funny reactions to anesthesia... I’ve had to have CPR preformed because my body doesn’t like it... and the other thing is because I’ve two very quick c-sections that left a lot of damage she has to cut a two inch band out of my belly ... I also have endometriosis in my c-section scar ... I wasn’t sure about the catheter thing cuz i don’t remember ever having one ... she is for sure taking my left ovary and leaving my right ... thank you for the helpful advice

I had a catheter during surgery - I don't remember them putting it in or taking it out. I only know it was there because I asked about it & it was a little painful to pee at first afterwards. The pain went away in a couple of days, though.
