Re: Necessary to have someone spend the night in the hospital?

I also have to have a private room in order for my sister to stay with me overnight for the surgery. I could probably manage fine but my sister insists that she is staying.

I will not know until I arrive for surgery (July 2nd) whether I will be able to get a private room. I called hospital registration and was told that I couldn't "book" it in advance (like a hotel..lol) because it all depends on whether there is a private room available when I arrive for my surgery.

I would feel much better if I knew for sure but hospitals do not operate like hotels.....

I had not thought about the private room issue. I'll have to check on that and request one. I'll also have to find out whether insurance will pay and what the extra cost might be.

My DH can sleep sitting up, and he is a very heavy sleeper. I don't think it will bother him in the least to sleep in a recliner. If I have nausea that doesn't allow me to call for help, it will be a godsend to have him there.

It certainly is different for everyone!

I slept all day after my surgery. I finally was wide awake late that afternoon and visted with hubby and my 2 teenagers. I sent them home as it was a school night.

Most insurances only cover a semi-private room and you would have to pay extra for a private room. Not sure about your hospital, but usually you have to wait until you check in for surgery and then find out if a private room is available.

Re: Necessary to have someone spend the night in the hospital?

I was fortunate to have my sister who is an advanced nurse practioner stay with me both nights. It was very nice to have her company, advocacy, and help--although I know I would have been fine without it. The hsp was quite a ways from both of our homes, so it also saved her getting a hotel room.

She did things like flag down a nurse for more pain meds, helped me to bathroom and walk halls, fixed my covers for me so I did not have to bend. I think I probably got better care not only because of my sister helping me but also because the nursing staff were very respectful of and to her because of her advanced degree in nursing.

I was in a private room on the oncology unit where all rooms are private. They brought in a cot and linens for her and she was able to get food in for meals if she wanted it. I did not have to pay extra for anything.
