Drink Concord Grape Juice (2002)

A glass of Concord grape juice a day will keep the doctor away.

It's turned out to be an anti-oxidant powerhouse and anti-oxidants are good for preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease.

A daily glass of Concord grape juice may offer more protection against blood clots (platelet aggregation) than a daily aspirin--with fewer side effects (and better taste!). An aspirin a day halves your risk of heart problems. But, when under stress or exercising heavily and adrenaline pumps through your system, aspirin's protection disappear but the concord grape juice protection stays the same.

There's a rating system developed at Tufts for antioxidants called the Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity or ORAC. The higher the ORAC rating the better the food at fighting cancer and heart disease and diabetes etc. Six ounces of Concord grape juice provided the highest number of ORAC units of any of the foods studied (be sure the label says Concord and not a mixed-type grape juice). The USDA showed in 1996 that grape juice has three times the antioxidant ORAC values of orange juice, tomato juice, or apple juice--and not just in the lab. An "in vivo" study (in a live body), showed that orange juice had little effect in an oxidation test while Concord grape juice kept working.

And here's an idea I'm going to try for Concord grape juice--

Mix a sprintzer made of 2/3 cup Concord grape juice, 1/3 cup club soda, ice, and a dash of lime.

Trish,

Thanks for the concord grape juice tip!
I always enjoy grape juice, cranberry juice & OJ (not the knife guy). Anyway I will look specifically for the concord grape juice next time. Sometimes I combine them with crushed ice. Soo nice.

Thanks Again,

Sister Katie

Well, yeah, I do know!!!

When I was poking around doublechecking on the facts I encountered the history of Concord grapes, though I knew some of it.

They are a hybrid from grapes native to North America developed by a farmer outside Concord, Massachusetts--home of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, and Louisa May Alcott (you'll have to excuse me<--literature major). They are hardy where the European types die out. The first grape juice was made by a dentist named (drum roll) Welch. It was marketed first to Methodists for use in communion since they won't drink wine. I know that one, that's what I had in church growing up!
