Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 24-Aug 30,2020

Hello, my surgery was yesterday morning at 8am and I was home by 4pm. The only concerning thing was a strange, black thing on my right ovary which will take 2-3 weeks to get pathology back. So am a bit worried about that due to family history of OC and BC (I am already in the high risk BC program). Ok more than a bit worried. Pain is not that bad, nothing compared to what I usually deal with. I have a script for dilaudid but am only taking Tylenol. Can't take ibuprofen/naproxen due to ulcers, but if I could I would take that too. I'm in the "general sore belly" stage, rather than the incisions.

Mostly worried about going to the bathroom for the first time! There is some gurgling going on like things are waking up and I am scared! Have any of you used the bathroom yet? Sorry if too personal but...

Take it easy everyone.

Aww I just had to reply to you...I had an extensive endo surgery back when my son was 2 and so desperately wanted to be picked up, and I so badly wanted to pick him up! I ached to! Don't do it of course, but my heart feels for you! It's 10 years later now and he is helping my husband to take care of me now after surgery yesterday. Time flies but I remember that feeling like yesterday! You will get makeup cuddles as soon as you are able!

I’m on day 3 of recovery...definitely had some gurgling too . I’ve been taking stool softener every day and passing more and more gas. I feel like I need to poop today but also understand that I probably shouldn’t push at all. But how else will it come out? I’m so confused and nervous about that.

I wasn't expecting the first BM quite so soon after surgery , but I was successful last night. Day after surgery
Uncomfortable, but not painful. Take those stool softeners, drink water and walk!

to rubellite, sarah1234, newnormal1 and Chesapeakebay32-

So glad you are here on this thread!
Seeing you here means that you are on the other side of surgery and thus on the recovery side.
YAYYYY!

It's crazy, other folks don't understand what a HUGE (and I mean huge) burden and anxiety producing surgery this was. Only sisters know.
That's why I am glad that you are here!!

So, first things first:
How's your pain?
I know that if you have ulcers or previous surgeries then you may not be able to take Ibuprofens.
Some people get really nauseous with rx strength drugs.
Some of us may try to get by with only over the counter pills.

So what's a girl to do?

I would suggest that you take what your doc prescribed so that you can be in as little pain as possible for the first few days or even the first week (unless you don't need them of course, no need to overmedicate, what I mean is don't be afraid to take your pills)
Take your meds around the clock, don't wait for the big pain wave to hit!
(and note the time down when you take the meds so that you know when you are allowed to take more).
Being comfortable means that you are resting better and that does promote healing.

Now, for myself, I found out during my hysterectomy that rx painkillers make me hugely constipated!! But I did need them for quite a while.
I also found out that I could never get completely pain free (you'd have to knock me out for that to happen). So I tried to find a happy medium where I was comfortable (though not pain free) but awake, and then I sloooooowly weaned myself off the prescription drugs.

My notebook really helped with that since I could space the pills more and more apart and even when I woke during the night I could turn on the light and look at the notes and see whether or not I could take another pill (if I needed it).

So about that first bowel movement:
It took me 7 (seven !!) days.
You are right not to strain and push.
Yes, do take a stool softener (anything else must be ok'ed by your doc).
Do drink some prune juice warmed up (that's what did the trick for me eventually).
Yes drink a lot of water.
Yes walk around as tolerated.

And then TRUST ME, the bowel movement WILL eventually happen.

Hang in there, sweeties!
Thinking of you!

Hello all, I had my surgery (LSH)this morning . It started at 11am and didn't get out until 3:45. In recovery for 2 and a half hours. I am home now. I am in a lot of pain. They also had excision to do my endometrioma. I was shown the picture and it was so big. All in all I have 4 incisions from the lap and 1 big incision for that. I tried to walk a couple times and I get hot flashes, really dizzy, and feel like I'm going to pass out. Is this normal? And I think im feeling a little gas pain in my rib cage area. I got charco caps for the gas pain I hope it helps. I hope everyone has a safe and blessed recovery. I also forgot to mention they have me a patch behind my ear for nausea, could the passing out dizzy feeling be from that. Other than that I just feel the normal pain I guess pulling pinching feeling?

I received the patch as well and kept it for 24 hours following surgery because I was very nauseous. They said it can make you feel extremely tired and woozy so that could be it but always a good idea to call your doctor and let them know just in case!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Aug 24-Aug 30,2020

Hi ladies! I had a hysterectomy on August 25th. It took 4 hours because my uterus was so enlarged due to fibroids. According to pathology, it weighed almost 1.5 lbs! Yesterday was rough. The pain came mostly from being sore from the awkward positioning during surgery. My belly button incision also feels tight. My bladder was grumpy the first night but back to peeing normal. No BM yet but I haven’t eaten much.
