Planning for possible hysterectomy and am a serious runner

Hi: I am 50 and have hyperplaysia that is not going away. I will try a Mirena IUD for 3 mos and if the biopsy still shows the hyperplaysia I need to then have a hysterectomy. My lifestyle is really active, esp running. I used to run a lot of marathons and now run a few half marathons every year. I would love to hear from women who are runners or very active and find out how you things went after the hysterectomy. My active lifestyle is the most important thing in my life and I would need to plan what to expect. I have no problems laying low for a few weeks after to properly recover. Is it recommended to go on hormones after a hysterectomy? I would love to hear from anyone. I currently have no knowledge of this, what to expect. Just starting my research today. Thanks!

I have a dear friend who is a serious cross fitter and in amazing shape. It means the world to her. She has already overdone it by exercising before being released by her doctor just 4 weeks after her surgery. Based on what I've seen with her I'd suggest that you plan for 6-8 weeks of no running and then slowly ramping back up in order not to injure yourself internally. But each person is different.

She has significantly delayed her healing and if she had been more careful she would be much better off.

I had my ovaries removed so I did start the estrogen patch the day after my surgery. I've avoided almost all side effects of surgical menopause because of the patch. Some ladies opt to use nothing and I hope they will chime in to let you know how that has gone for them.

Personally I would not face surgical menopause without estrogen replacement but each person has to make a decision that is best for them.

You will almost certainly be restricted from exercise for four to eight weeks. During that time, you'll be able to walk, but that's it. I was able to do light exercise after four weeks (no ab work) and full exercise after eight. I'm not a runner; I do the walk at home videos and walk/tone videos. Before COVID, I did Pilates reformer and classes at a studio called barre3. Once I can do classes again, I'll be so happy to go.

Should surgery be necessary: Listen to your body and don't overdo it.

Thank you so much for the replies. Great info. Thanks. I think if I do have to get a hysterectomy I will take 8 weeks to recover and then likely take hormones so that I don't suffer too terribly from the sudden onset of menopause. I am still seeing specialsts.
