I'm 6 days post op after my TAH. Have been using normal strength tablets for pain which is okay. I can't walk very far and can't stay upright for more than about 10 minutes. My attention span is very short, so it has taken me awhile to read all the other posts to see how everyone is going. It has been a tiring and painful recovery so far, but I have chocolates and champagne waiting for me at the other end when I am feeling better!

Best wishes to everyone for a speedy recovery.

I had my PAH on Feb 20th, a week ago today! Diagnosed with intensely bleeding fibroids I spent 5 years of doing almost every thing I could to avoid surgery. I had a myomectomy, 2 D and Cs, a hysteroscopic myomectomy, Lupron for more than a year and finally tried acupuncture and Chinese herbs. At the end of the day nothing could ease the blood loss sufficiently to take me out of my chronic anemic state and I decided to throw in the towel.
Although I had adhesions from so much prior trauma, Dr. concluded that I had a fantastic surgery and had most definitely made the right choice. He left my ovaries and cervix and removed my uterus and appendix. When I came to after the surgery all I can say is that I felt this overwhelming sense of well being. My first thought was that I had been freed at last from a condition that had been consuming my life and my peace.
My belly continues to be a little sore but I feel that I am healing quickly. My Dr. prescribed Percocet and I am going very easy on it as it causes constipation.
I am making sure that I am eating very healthily (lots of colors and grains!), resting religiously and walking a bit daily. With each passing day I am feeling better and better.
To my great surprise, I feel almost euphoric with the fact that finally the source of so much anguish has been put to rest. I loved my uterus but she needed to go and I am so at peace with that decision. I have to say that one of the most difficult parts of making my decision came from the fear that other women with their systems intact, transmitted to me. I now realize that.
I have gotten so much from hystersisters and look forward to helping other women to discover the path that is right for them and to help dispell the fear.
Peace and Thanks to everyone!

It is reassuring that I am not the only one who feels like they are taking one step forward and a step back. You feel like you are doing good one day and then alot more pain and tiredness the next. Guess that is normal, I was worried that I was taking too many of my pain pills since I will need a refill at my appointment tomorrow, but I don't really feel like doing much while in pain. So, enough grouching I guess, hang in there everyone!

Week One update

Hi everyone,
I pray that we all continue to do well on the road to recovery and I thank you all for your posts and the great comments and suggestions.

Well, at this time last week I was coming out of surgery and on the way to recovery. Despite my setback due to the medication problem, I am feeling pretty good. Unlike most of you I am having some gas but a lot of diarrhea. I think it is because my body is still dumping the bad meds. I am now only taking tylenol for pain and am able to sit up most of the day.

Question, when I lay on my side it feels like my stomach actually moves, has anyone else experienced this? Maybe its just me!

Anyway, I'm praying for us all and thank you all for your prayers.
peace and love,

First post / TVH 2/21/08

TVH w/rectal septum repair that includes internal stitches.

Pre Op / Surgery / Recovery = piece of cake.

Recommendations for the upcoming sisters: Know your pain management plan before surgery so you can communicate effectively w/nurses, etc.

I had IV morphine like candy for 2 days plus Vicodin PLUS ibuprofen. It seemed like each nurse's shift had a different theory toward my pain management. I should have asked more questions ahead of time about med schedule. At discharge, no Rx ready, no meds for 12 hrs, & I felt dizzy, nauseated, & in pain for 1/2 day until I got myself more organized.

Catheter re-inserted 1 day after surgery & was excrutiating. Delayed release from hospital by 1 day since no sufficient urination. Sitz baths are a HUGE help. They also helped relax me for all elimination. Even turning on the water faucet for several minutes had an amazing effect. Drank lots of water. Remember stool softener.

Each day has new pain & I'm treating the rectal stitches like an episiotomy site - Tucks, sitz bath, etc. Having trouble sitting for long periods of time, but little bleeding or other problems. Sleeping now okay.

heart,
i gotta tell you, i know how you feel. today i feel worse for wear. i am tired and in pain....today is probably the first day i feel like i have been hit with a truck. well, i am just hoping to have a good day later on today or tomorrow. need that mixture to keep going!!!

hi everyone,
hope everyone is doing okay today. i can't believe we've been on this side for a week or more now!! even though i am hurting today and just feel exhausted (which is weird because last night was the most i have slept since i got home from the hospital.....nights just aren't great for sleeping anymore. i pee so much!!!)
anyway, just wanted to wish everyone well for the day and pray for you all

Father God, we know you are faithful and will carry us through our bad days just as you do our good days, help those that are hurting today to rest in you and to not get discouraged. Father, I thank you for my wonderful sisters and pray that those that are doing great today will enjoy it and not over do it. Allow us all to take one day at a time and to rest in your loving arms. Great physician, wonderful counselor, encourage those that are dealing with emotional issues and bring them solace. Your peace surpasses all our understanding and I pray that for those of us who struggle with not understanding how we feel or frustrations about our situations, that you will pour out that peace even as i pray, that they will feel comfort. Lord, thank you for who you are and for loving us so much. Lord, we don't understand why we need to go through all of this and why we have had so much pain, but I do know that you helped me through the last year and i pray that you will carry me through the healing process. thank you Jesus for these women who have come to mean so much to me. Bless them today with happy hearts and much rest. amen

have a blessed day

Good for you on the weight loss. I don't have a scale at home so I guess I will find out at the Dr's tomorrow. It is so weird not even being able to do little things for yourself when you are a "go to" person, but I am sure not going to "undo" everything I had done down there. GL!
