Upcoming December hysterectomy: Two silly questions on what to take to hospital - straw and slippers

So, you know how your brain gets hung up on the smallest silliest details when you are stressing?

1. Women have said to take a long straw - is this so you can have a big glass of water but don’t have to worry about lifting its weight?
2. What design of slippers? One without a back - I worry I’ll just trip over; the ones I have are like little ballet slippers so I have to bend over or pull my leg up to pull up the back of them; I’ve wondered about borrowing a pair from my MIL which are a traditional slipper shape so may be able to work my feet into them without bending over

With regards to a straw for your water bottle, that wasn't necessary for me. Post-op weight restrictions typically go up to 10#, which is roughly equivalent to a gallon of water; if you stick to a smaller bottle, like maybe 16- 24 oz., that shouldn't be an issue. As for what style of slippers, you should be able to wear your ballet flats if you also pack a long shoe horn to help you to get them on and off without a lot of bending over. Didn't need a straw, just drank from a glass. As for slippers I was able to sit on the side of the bed and put them on. I was much more mobile than I expected, the nurse got me up the 1st morning post op and once she was satisfied I wasn't dizzy or anything told me I could get out of the hospital gown and into my own pajamas. I was able to do that on my own, just slowly.

I wore the hospital grippy socks. They didn’t let me walk outside my room bc of covid restrictions, so I didn’t need shoes until I got dressed to go home. Good luck!

The straw I'm assuiming is so you don't have to use your core to sit up and sip without spilling. Trying to sit up in bed and sip would mean pulling at stitches or putting a strain on the vaginal repairs, etc. With a long straw you can kind of turn your head to the side gently and just take a sip. The hospital should have straws but if you want a really long, bendy one that's a good idea. The hospital provided me with slipper socks. Not the cutest things in the world but they have the rubber traction on the bottom. Then you can just toss them after you get home. If you have trouble getting them on the nurse will help. I just left mine on the entire time I was there. I didn't remove them when I got into bed.

The hospital provided me with both - a bendy straw in a cup, and slipper socks with grippy soles. Both went home with me.

If you bring your own slippers, make sure that they have secure, non-slip soles. You may be walking the halls after your surgery as walking helps you heal. But with COVID, they may not allow you to walk around.
