What scares you the most about surgery?

Hi all! A thought has just occurred to me. Maybe it would be good to get all our fears about surgery "off our chests", and on the board.

What scares you the most about surgery?

The thing that scares me the most is the pain after. I'm also scared of barfing... I hate that! The actual event, I'm okay with!

What scares you the most about surgery?

Great idea~ I am almost 4 weeks post op (LSH) and feeling great. Looking back, I felt like you, afraid of the pain but not the procedure. Still, on the morning of my surgery I became very anxious. My angel of a nurse in pre-op had undergone the same procedure a few months before. She said she was so frightened that she asked for a Valium the day before to help her calm down. I would have never thought of this! Just know that it's an option. Remember, many people are working to minimize your pain- it's up to you to let them know when you are uncomfortable. You'll be fine!!

What scares you the most about surgery?

Great idea...

My biggest fear about surgery is that it won't fix the things that bother me the most: my bowel issues, hip pain, back pain and headaches. I know it will take care of my menstrual pains and inconveniences, which are my number one complaint!

Lesser fears are: not waking up and painful complications.

Other than that, I'm okay with it- thanks to this wonderful site and my wonderful doctor, mom and aunt!

We'll all be glad once it's over!

Thanks!! I'm glad to hear from you putter! I'd love to be calm right from home the morning of! :eyes: Valium eh? Sorry...the Canadian in me, and proud of it! Yes, I suppose that's true newbodyplz.... Other than the obvious--no periods anymore, will it fix all the symptoms? Yep,that's another fear. I'm gonna risk it though!

What scares you the most about surgery?

The thing I am most afraid of actually and it seems pretty silly is how the sex between my husband and I will be ever, with all the repairs and removals I am wondering if it is going to be good for him? Good for me? I thought I would be afraid of dying but nope sex is the only thing I am worried about! silly huh?

What scares you the most about surgery?

I didn't worry about me "not waking up" but did very much when my daughter had her tonsils out. Her anesthesiologist (sp?!) was so kind. He called the night before the surgery to explain exactly what would be done, answered all my questions, and really helped ease my fears. Perhaps you could get the name of that doctor and speak to him or her or their nurse. I think the more you know, the less you'll have to fear. Take care

What scares you the most about surgery?

I'm 1 month post op, and it was worth it. My fears were regarding the pain - had surgery 1 1/2 years ago and was allergic to the pain meds then. So had great discussions with the doc beforehand to make sure I would have something different and that would work. Pain was undercontrol - don't be afraid to use the meds - if you stay on top of the pain it doesn't get away from you.
And I feel sooooooooo much better.

And for those scared of not waking up - it's always good to have your relationship with the Almighty in order. Even crossing the street could be dangerous.
