Provera to stop bleeding, due to anemia, before hysterectomy

Anybody take Provera to stop nonstop bleeding? My hemoglobin is 8.8 and I have surgery in 2 weeks and I really don't want to postpone it.

I have never taken it and don't know what to expect. I tried Lysteda, but it makes me feel like I have the flu with major joint pain.

Provera is a synthetic form of progesterone. It typically causes the same symptoms that you experience the week before your period, when your system is progesterone dominant. Different women experience different symptoms during that week - some sail through, others have major PMS. What you personally experience is an *approximation* of how you're going to do on Provera.

I LOVE PROVERA! But I'm estrogen dominant. No more migraines, no more neuropathy, no more insomnia. It will do the trick for your bleeding, too. Meanwhile take iron to get your hgb up.

That's actually a really good illustration of what I mean by it affecting different women in different ways. :-) (Thanks, Beth!)

I was on a different type of synthetic progesterone, megestrol, for a month. It recreated the "black hole moods" that plagued me during PMS so strongly that I was on the verge of sliding into an active depressive episode, so I didn't refill the prescription after the first month. My doc had wanted me to be on it for 7 months, but that just wasn't going to happen for me.

Depending on your natural hormone balance, you may love Provera, hate it or find that it doesn't affect you strongly at all (e.g. my mother).

Re: Provera to stop bleeding, due to anemia, before hysterectomy

I found out yesterday that my biopsy says "disordered proliferative endometrium" which is why I'm bleeding all the time. I have unopposed estrogen and I need progesterone.

No cancer, but this puts me at risk for cancer because the lining gets so thick. I am scheduled for a hyst in less than 2 weeks, but now wonder if I should try progesterone...either provera or prometrium...to help solve my bleeding issues and avoid surgery. I could also have adenomyosis, but my uterus is not enlarged and it isn't very prominent.

I hate to postpone surgery as I have been dealing with bleeding issues for 2 years (I'm 48), but now I feel like I have an answer and wonder if I should try the progesterone first. The cream has never helped me.

Re: Provera to stop bleeding, due to anemia, before hysterectomy

I'd suggest that for a first step you try the Provera and see how you tolerate it. You have to try it to stop the bleeding anyway, whether you decide to go through with a hysterectomy or not. If you try and you find that you tolerate well, then you can consider cancelling your surgery. If you try it and find that you tolerate it poorly, then you might want to go ahead and have surgery so that you don't have to keep taking it! :-)
