Pain medications post op--abdominal
For an abdominal hysterectomy--what were you given? I guess I should not read so much, but saw someone with a laparascopic hysterectomy who just got Toradol and wasn't allowed anything narcotic (not because of an allergy or anything). Don't get me wrong--it was wonderful when I had a kidney stone. But would that be enough for the full TAH? Don't worry, I will ask ask ask at the pre-op, but just curious what others' experiences were.

Re: Pain medications post op--abdominal
Well they were gonna give me Tylenol #3, but codine comes right up with me.. so they said they would give me Vicodin.
Wow - Toradol is what I get when I go to the ER for my migraines... it helps with that pain - maybe it would the other???? hmmmm

Re: Pain medications post op--abdominal
I had Dilaudid IV in the hospital, then switched to oral Percocet with 800mg Ibuprofin too. Did well on these.
A narcotic is good, but an antiinflammatory med along with it helps alot.

Re: Pain medications post op--abdominal
I got morphine (in a PCP pump) along with regular tylenol. I stopped pushing the button on the morphine pump the day after surgery and found out I only had pulling from the incision so I stopped the morphine, and just took the tylenol they gave me. I know that I was comfortable during the first night so the morphine must have worked.

In the hospital I had a morphine pump. I had percocet after being discharged from the hospital.

Re: Pain medications post op--abdominal
I had the diluad (sp?) pump and used it a bunch my first night--I know from past surgeries that it's not a great idea to wait until you hurt and then decide to use the meds-- it's best to just stay drugged up the first 12 hours or so. It worked great. Came home the next day and went straight to advil. It was a bit too soon--I coulda used my percocet for a few days and it would have helped a ton-- but I had a lazy bladder and had to wear the catheter home. Percocet would have compounded the lazy bladder so it was worth it to me to not use it, get the bladder going, and lose the catheter.
I am on day 14 and have only taken 4 percocet total. And at this point I only take one or two doses of Tylenol a day.

Re: Pain medications post op--abdominal
I had the Dilaudid IV for the over night and left with hydrocodone to take as needed. I had more pain from the gas than I did from the actual surgery. I also was given aleve to help with inflammation. You may want to have some gas-x at home (if your doctor says it is ok to help with the gas). Best wishes to you.
