starting new job/scheduling hysterectomy

After lurking in the post-op (could not post there because no hyst date set) I am realizing that recovery is going to be a long haul. Well, over the summer I was hired to work in the cafeteria where my kids go to school and I'm starting soon (me~a lunchlady! heh)
My question is, being a new job, is it fair to expect them to give me 6 weeks off (maybe more???) - after only working for them a couple of weeks? I already told them I had a vacation planned in Sept, and they were understanding. I also told them about the surgery, but not what I'm having done. They might be thinking I'll be back way sooner. I am losing hair over this!
I was so excited to get a little something that wouldn't take me away from my kids, and now I feel like it's getting ripped out from under me. And I'm figuring once returning, there will be some lifting involved. (boxes of tater tots!)
I know my health is what's important, and I need to take care of me. I was just curious what your opinions were. Thanks!

Just be honest and tell them.. Find out what kind of lifting is involved. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself. You'll be doing a lot of reaching and bending (I used to work in a cafe in jr.high school) and that is going to be very uncomfortable and probably painful too. When are you supposed to have the surgery? Maybe you can work there the next semester.. just a thought. You only have one chance to heal right so please take care of yourself and think of your health first.. Your kids need you healthy.
