AGC in pap smear, negative biopsy, polyp

Hi everyone, I have been a member of this forum for about 10 months. I am 42 and 10 moths ago I had an abnormal pap smear with AGC (atypical glandular cells) with negative hpv. I had a colposcopy and an endometrial biopsy which were negative and then an ultrasound and everything looked normal. I had a follow up pap smear which was normal.
A month ago a had an ultrasound and the technician saw a polyp. Today I had a Sonohysterogram and it is a 0.7 cm polyp. I have decided to have a hysteroscopy with D&C and remove the polyp. My ob doesn't seem concerned but I am worried that what they are seeing on the ultrasound isn't a polyp but cancer, the AGC on the old pap smear is driving me crazy.. has anyone had any similar experiences? I still having my periods and no symptoms

A pap smear tests for cervical cancer, and it sounds like you're talking about a uterine polyp, which would be a different type of cancer (if at all - polyps usually are *not* cancer), so I don't think your pap should make you more nervous about the polyp. Good luck - I didn't find hysteroscopy and D&C difficult to go through, I had deep sedation and don't remember a thing.

Re: AGC in pap smear, negative biopsy, polyp

Hi Lisa, thank you for replying! The gyn that did the AGC pap smear suspected the atypical cells were from my uterus and that is why he did the endometrial biopsy. He then suggested a colposcopy with d&c which I declined. That was 10 months ago, in the meantime I switched doctors. I am scared that the AGC were from the endometrium and that the polyp may be cancer showing in the ultrasound as a polyp

Polyps are very common and in all probability will turn out to be nothing sinister. It’s just so stressful waiting for the results and your mind will be in overdrive.

Fingers crossed for a good result.

Re: AGC in pap smear, negative biopsy, polyp

Agree that the odds are on the side of this polyp being a perfectly benign process. If it would turn out to be something possibly related to your previous findings, most uterine related pre-cancers/cancers are of the slower growing variety. So, you'd still likely be finding things on the sooner than later end of the spectrum. My original gyn didn't properly follow my first AGC pap, so by the time I was diagnosed, it was about a year and a half later. Even with the delay, my cancer was still considered early stage at a IAI. Hang in there and try not to worry so very much. Here's hoping for the most boring path report ever!

I can help with this!! I had a AGC pap too and my doctor was hoping to find a polyp because she said polyps can cause these abnormal paps. In my case she didn’t find a polyp but I was having other issues too so I went ahead with the hysterectomy. I had adenomyosis and a large cyst on my ovary after all was said and done. So AGC paps can be scary but not all of them mean anything but they do aggressively check things out because they come from higher up then the cervix. Relax and don’t google, it’s the worst!!
