Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Hey everyone! A bit about me:

I started having heavy periods a little over a year ago. My PCP ordered an ultrasound to make sure there wasn’t anything funky going on. Nothing showed up and when I went back for my follow up, things had slowed down. She said let’s wait and see and to let her know if things got worse again. Fast forward to this winter and things got heavy again. She did another ultrasound that showed a couple of possible fibroids so she referred me to a new gyn in our area. He’s amazing! He recommended a D&C, hysteroscopy and ablation at first. Then after he found out I had an ultrasound from last year to compare to, he didn’t like that the fibroids had grown up in that short of a time at my age (45). He said we could do the original plan but the fibroids would probably grow back so he recommended a hysterectomy. He did a biopsy to make sure it wasn’t anything other than fibroids- it wasn’t. So here we are...

On Wednesday I’ll be having a dvTH. Keeping my ovaries. Not sure about Fallopian tubes but I’m going to ask about that when I get there. I think I’m going to ask him to take them out if he’s not already planning to.

Best wishes to everyone this week!

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Good morning. I have to admit I am getting anxious about my surgery in 4 more days. Extra worried because I take an anti-arrhythmic but I know I’m not the first one they’ve had to deal with like this with the anesthesia. I’m really concerned about the prospect of my robotic procedure turning into an open abdomen and if so, do you have all the incisions for laparoscopic then they have to do a main cut for an open? So then you’ll have 3 to 4 scars including a big one for the open procedure if it turns to that? Plus, then you will have all the trapped gas from the laparoscopy. So many things on my mind I only hope I’m going to get to speak with the doctor before the procedure. Positive vibes and well wishes to all the ladies that have gone through this and the ones that are getting ready to. 🙏🙏

Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Good morning,
I have been waiting what seems to be a lifetime for this! I have fibroids, heavy bleeding and suspected endo and adenomyosis. This year my symptoms have become unbearable and I try to remind myself that as scary as surgery is, a new life awaits. I am trying to get my house in order and check off things from a never ending to do list before my surgery this Friday morning. I am as ready as I will ever be at this point. Sending you all vibes of strength and healing!

Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Hi everyone!
I’m Suzanne, 51 years old and with 2 teenage sons.
I’m having a full abdominal hysterectomy on Thursday, uterus cervix and tubes, not taking out ovaries.
I have a fibroid that doubled in size in the last year, and I’ve had heavy bleeding including mid-cycle bleeding for a few years now. My iron levels are very low so I’m going into the surgery with iron-deficiency anemia. What I’m looking forward to the most is getting my energy back once my iron levels are able to finally build up post-surgery.
I’m in Canada and surgeries were mostly suspended here back in April with our third wave of COVID so there was a lot of uncertainty. Friday I got a call that the hospital had a cancellation and scheduled my surgery for this week Thursday. A bit sudden since my husband is out of town for work, but I’ve made arrangements. I’m looking forward to having this done finally. It feels like it was a long road to get here.
I had ordered a few supplies from the Hysterectomy Store online but I thought I had more time, hopefully they arrive in time!
Today was my pre-op COVID test, and tomorrow is my pre-op bloodwork. I’m a bit unsure what my low iron means for the surgery.
Now I’m off to do all the things I won’t be able to do for a while afterwards, and get some easy meal options for my kids since they will be on their own for a couple of days.

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Hi everyone,

My surgery is scheduled for this upcoming Friday. I've been dealing with heavy periods and minor bladder issues a little over a year. Long story short I have an enlarged uterus, multiple fibroids and the biggest fibroid is pressing on my bladder.

I'm happy to finally get the full hysterectomy (he's leaving my ovaries, as far as we know). My only issue is I will come home for 3 days with a catheter and that is freaking me out!

I'm hopeful all will be well, recovery is recovery, the first week is the hardest....I’ve had other abdominal surgeries but I'm still really nervous because it is surgery at the end of the day.

Best of luck ladies! I'm so happy to have found this site and community.

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

Good morning!

I'm Shannon, 45 years young. I am having a Laparoscopic hysterectomy including cervix and tubes, suspension of my vagina to reduce the risk of prolapse later, appendectomy, endometriosis excision w/ DeVinci and possibly removal of my right ovary if it looks at all suspicious on Tuesday 6/15. Like you ladies I am getting a little nervous, mostly for the nausea afterward. I am also nervous that they won't find any endometriosis when they go in and thus my 10 years of pain won't improve.

A little bit about my story. I have fibroids, suspected Endometriosis and possibly Adenomyosis.

I have had pain for 10 years now, since my daughter was born. At first it seemed mostly right SI joint pain. In 2012 after lots of PT and other conservative treatments, I was offered an SI joint fusion surgery (even more major than the one I will have on Tuesday), but declined because it just didn't feel right. My symptoms progressed to pelvic pain over the years. After I exhausted all other treatments for my SI joint. I had full GI work up as I have issues with that as well. I finally saw a gyne after several years who is convicted I had endometriosis. My symptoms improved with birth control, but I continued to have some pain with times of worsening flares. My activity is so limited compared to before I had my daughter.

I recently found Nancy's Nook and realized that so many other symptoms I had correlated to Endo. I found a Nook specialist a few months ago and now I am having surgery. I am so hopeful for this surgery, but nervous too that they won't find anything because I was convinced for so long it was my SI joint and there was nothing more that could be done.

Sending positive thoughts to everyone for an uneventful surgery and a quick recovery!

Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 13, 2021

I was absolutely terrified of surgery. This was my first time ever having any type of medical procedure. My biggest fear was the anesthesia! What would it feel like, would I wake up? I was mentally prepared for pain, I knew about the gas from this forum. I cried up until I was out. I dont remember anything! So all my worries and fears were erased! I laid on a table then woke up in a chair! So weird! My surgery took several hours yet it felt like seconds. I would do it all over again if I had to. The gas was the most painful part of recovery for me but luckily short lived! I didnt take any pain meds, not even otc! I didnt need it. The pain I was in prior to surgery was much worse than the recovery pain. Happy surgeries to all!!

Good Afternoon 'es in Waiting!
Pre-op can be a very stressful time, and many women here say it's the hardest part of this process. Wondering about the unknowns and waiting can be anxiety inducing. Do your best to keep busy: clean the house and freeze some meals. If you have kids returning to school soon, do your back-to-school shopping now. Get out of the house and enjoy an activity with family or friends: the fresh air and fun are a great distraction and you will be housebound for a little while post op. And lastly: do things that nurture your soul... a bubble bath, read a book in the sunshine, yoga, meditate, a spa day. This time is all about you.
