Considering hysterectomy following Mirena failure
I have just been reminded that it is my hysterversary but it isn't. When I got to the hospital for my TAH (with both ovaries and cervix removed - the whole sherbang with a big T-cut) I was a mess and the nurse picked up on it and asked the specialist to check in with me.
He agreed that they couldn't operate when I wasn't entirely committed to it so he offered me the coil. I took it. I spent the first year in a fair bit of distress with pains down my legs (upper, inner thigh), sweats and so on but once it settled I felt better than I had for ages (I have long-standing severe endo with adeno and other crappy stuff).
However, the last couple of months something has changed, my periods got heavier, I got more endo pains, joint pains, lethargy and my boobs are about to explode, they're ridiculously large and sore.
Then, I got a pain in my left side and a stupid UTI again (frothy, cloudy pee, need to go all the time, can't go and all that) with bloody pee like I have not had before - very bloody, it lasted until mid-afternoon despite buckets of water drinking. I did not go to the doctors - pure laziness!
Walking to the car several days later, leaving work, I found I was unable to stand upright due to abdominal pain. I ignored it, went home, did stuff, then set the dogs up to be OK if I didn't come back and packed a bag for the ER - I've had PID 3 times in the past so I knew something wasn't right.
The emergency doc said it was a UTI that had got out of control and travelled up to my kidneys and that was why my tummy was sore. I took the antibiotics for several days and wasn't happy with the way my pain felt so went to my GP. He said, "kidney stones" and set me up for a scan. The antibiotics cleared the infection and I had the scan yesterday.
My mirena has moved, it is in my cervix rather than my womb. The technician made the point that it might be something pushing it out (I already had fibroids when it went in).
I have no kids so it was never recommended for me really and my sex drive is back of late (a complaint about Mirena I understand is that the libido drops off which mine certainly did when it went in)
I'm waiting for the GP to get the result and refer me back to the specialist but I feel somewhat like I might be doing that trip back to get it all, like ALL removed. I am scared that I am going to be a tube stitched at the end and no hormones so a dried up prune with no sex drive and dry skin.
If anyone who has had both ovaries removed, uterus gone, cervix gone and they still feel vital, I'd love a bit of a pep talk. My hair has turned grey overnight recently and my skin is dry as anything so I'm feeling really old (perhaps the menopause has actually started). I'm 47.
Glad of any help, feeling blue,
Tetley.

(((Tetley))))
It sounds like you have been through a lot in the last couple years.
How wonderful that you had such a caring nurse in Pre Op, and how wise of the doctor to not push you into a surgery you could have regretted but instead offered an alternative solution!
Even if you end up needing a complete hysterectomy now, you will know that you did try the options! That can help you find peace regarding your situation.
I hope you hear from your doctor soon and are able to speak to a specialist. It could be helpful for you and your doctors if you could keep detailed notes regarding all of the symptoms you are experiencing and all you have gone through. Since you have endometriosis mentioned in your signature line, you should also consider consulting with a doctor who specializes in treating endometriosis and may want to pop over to our Endometriosis Support forum.

Re: Considering hysterectomy following Mirena failure
Oh hun how awful. I had a mirena put in nearly 5 years ago as I have PCOS and it started to fail after 2 years I didn't have fibroids just periods ended up coming every 2 weeks very heavy and spotting daily when not heavy but before that they got abnormally irratic then put on iron tablets. I had my TAH on 6th jan this year. I do have my ovaries and I have never felt better
