Seen Any Good Movies or Read Any Good Books?

Nice to talk with you again, I can't agree with your comments about girls who get pregnant at an early age. My mother was an unmarried 19 year old when she had me (this is why I like the Gilmore Girls it is about Mother and Daughter relationships) and being in the 50s she was thrown out of her home by her father. She did marry after I was born and she was an excellent mother, who I miss so much as she died when she was 48yrs. I know some young girls are not good mothers at an early age but everyone is different. I didn't have my daughter until I was 27yrs and I wonder if I am a good mother.

Oh, and I hope you didn't take offence at mine, especially in light of your own story.

I just meant that I think the GG makes light of things with all that happiness and sugar and that usually it isn't like that.

Maybe the series got better as it went on, but my thought at the first couple of episodes was - Get Real!

And I really wanted to like it, too.

We do still watch GG, but this last year has been somewhat lame, IMHO. There is at least one season past the one where Rory drops out (the current season), and I've not heard yet whether or not it will be renewed. There have been some major issues between Rory and Lorelai this year, and I enjoy the dialogue without thinking of it as "real." However, this last week there was a scene that left me embarrassed for Lorelai (she got drunk, and it wasn't pretty). I have to watch it with the closed captions on, though, I've heard that there is about 20% more dialogue than the usual one-hour show and they all speak like they're as caffeinated as the scripts have them being...

I do miss Judging Amy -- Tyne Daly was always a pleasure to watch -- but Amy's love life was looking increasingly embarrassing!

I'm still an ER fan too. Maybe it's "slumming" as I am a medical person who always loved working in the ER. Other than that, we're not much for TV around here...

I love reading and have just finished Labyrinth by Kate Mosse and I have read Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet By Sarah Waters (Ithink)

Has anyone watched Brokeback Mountain? I've just got it on DVD (is it a bit controversial?)

Read _Affinity_ - it's really creepy!

I thought _Brokeback_ was a tad over-rated, but certainly better than _Crash_.

About GGG, I too liked the show at first but then after watching several seasons and my daughter asking me why we cannot be like that...I reconsidered. My 15 year old daughter wants me to be her friend and not her mother. I am holding firm and being her mom. She has started to act like Rory in her social life by drinking black cofee and tyring to act hyper or act like high from coffee and it irritates me she tries to talk fast like them too. I told her to cut it out but she does'nt because she knows it bugs me. I do watch it with my daughter just so I know what she is watching but I think it is too adult for teenagers. Some of the words they use I look up in dictionary. I am glad we have TIVO becuause we rewind just to hear the dialouge they say a lot of things I never knew you could say on T. V. I think next week is the last episode. Not sure if they will have Rory marry Logan or if Loralai and Luke will get married all up in the air....

Oh my gosh, I remember drinking as much black coffee as possible to see if I could get buzzed, but I was in college already, freshman year!


This thing about being a friend, is also one of the things that bugged me about the show. One sees that all too often in real life. I feel like shouting, to gals I know, too, you're her mother, darn it, not her buddy! So she gets a little mad at you! So what! What are you afraid of. But I don't have kids, so I keep still.

What kind of words do you gotta look up? Seriously? Since when do shows like that have sophisticated language? And "the seven words you can't say" (maybe now you can) on television, usually don't make it to the dictionaries (though i wouldn't be too sure about Random House).

And one more question - from someone on the other side of the pond - what is TIVO?

Please don't tell me anymore about the Gilmore Girls as I am one series behind you. I am waiting patiently for sky to show me the next series.

I can understand you not wanting your 15yr old to act like Rory my daughter is 19yrs and at Uni and her life is similar to Rorys (she has had 3 different boyfriends so far) I don't know if I am too liberal but I do allow her boyfriends to stay in her bedroom when they visit from Uni. I am not happy about it but she is 19yrs and it isn't against the law in our country. (16yrs is the age of consent) But a lot of my friends do the same with their teenage children and it is not because we have no morals it is just because they will do it else where won't they?

Anyway getting back to the Gilmore Girls please don't tell me what happens at the end of the series.

IMHO, I can see where you're coming from. Nineteen is above the age of consent, and you want you're daughter to be welcome in your home, and adults don't always have to agree on things.

I go balistic inside when I here of moms making breakfast for their daughters' boyfriends when the girls are far younger than that. One word: BOUNDRIES!!!!

Morals are about many things, not just about "that."

Back to books and the like - did you see the three part series they did on _Fingersmith_? Was it as good as the one they did on _Tipping the Velvet_? I have the TTV scene saver - be still my beating heart!

I work in a great place. As long as you're a good worker, your work station can express who you are.
