Upcoming hystserectomy 12/15/14. Nervous and frightened

Hello! I am scheduled for a TAH on Monday. I cannot begin to express the amount of anxiety I am having about this. I went for my pre-op yesterday and everything was fine. I am a healthy 40 year old. The one factor that really frightens me is knowing that they now use an epidural for pain control. I HATE the thought of a needle in my back. I also find myself making morbid statements like "If I die on Monday.....". Is this normal?? So many thoughts and fears right now. I know that this weekend is going to just fly by and I will be in the O.R. in no time. Ladies, good thoughts and well wishes, PLEASE!!!

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

yep, a tick to all of your concerns. I definitely experienced nerves weird thoughts like what if I don't make it through. It's a major surgery and we're only human. But I'm glad I did it. I imagined it worse than what it was. Nothing we can't handle, and there is help for pain and support for any questions and concerns on here.

Good luck, rest and hope it all goes well.

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

If the epidural scares you so much, can you request not to have one? I know they are great for pain control, but i never had one and the pain was manageable otherways. I had all those same fears, and found no easy way to let them go intil they started the aneathesia!!

Mine is Monday as well so I understand your fears.. I am nervous and overwhelmed. Mine will be under normal anesthesia though. And it is DaVinci laproscopic with vaginal assistance.

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

I will pray and send good thoughts your way! I am 3 and half weeks away from my surgery and I am only 34, having same thoughts about dying, writing down different notes to different people. I have 4 kids to be looked after and it scares me!
But you will do great! Just think No more pain, no more periods, oh I am so excited for that all!!!! Good Luck

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

Thanks ladies! I have 5 kiddos and a very very dependent husband! I know that my anticipated 4 day absence is going to greatly inconvenience them!!! I will probably come home to shabby, malnourished children, LOL! I have so many thoughts running through my head right now and I can't focus on anything. I hope that it all goes by so quickly and I am back home with my family in no time.

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

Hi!

You're not alone! Here are a few good thoughts...1) it's the second most common surgery, 2) If you use an epidural for pain control, the studies I have read say people report 0-3 on the pain scale afterwards, and an average of 5-7 without it. I believe it is optional, but it is an option that sounds good to me. I am electing to have the epidural, but they would be just as happy to do it without it; 3) just think how much hubby and the kids will appreciate you after having to experience life without you taking care of them!

However, I am 4 1/2 days out (12/17), and I am really having a bad night too. I haven't worried too much until now, but it's getting so close. Just think...one week from tonight, and all good -- you'll be done!

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

I know how that is..mine is the 22nd and I'm overwhelmed and nervous had some minor breakdowns also. But I have two loving children and a wonderful husband. We will be fine and get through it and home in no time. I don't want the epidural either to afraid of that.

Re: !2/15/14. Nervous and frightened

I am ten days out. Panic attacks are the norm for me now. But I am sure that we will all be ok in the end. Best wishes to, and prayers for all of you!
