Vaginal drainage 1 week post-hysterectomy - normal? how long will it last?

So i'm glad i got on here because i am having this problem as well sorta. the first three days after surgery i didn't have any drainage until my first bm. after that i've been draining & it's weird. It doesn't smell, & it's not all blood, more yellow reddish color. but it pools up & only comes out when i stand up. has anyone else had this issue? should i be concerned? how long does it last? so many questions that my doct kind of just brushes off.

and

I saw your questions posted on another thread and felt you needed your own - both to get some good introductory links to our site and to address your concern.

As you may have seen on the other thread, vaginal discharge and drainage is typical. You're a week out from surgery, and your body is moving the needed repair "supplies" to the areas where you had surgery, including the vaginal cuff, and they get moved in fluids. Your body is also cleaning out what's not needed - dead cells and bacteria. Our article Vaginal Discharge After Hysterectomy which goes into very good detail about what to expect. The Sister whose thread you posted on was having a strong fishy-smelling odor and she does need to get it checked out for it sounds like an infection. You don't have that, nor itching, burning or a cottage cheese type of discharge. I wore a panti-liner for 2-3 weeks after surgery, because I was having discharge.

Since you've just joined us, you might find these resources helpful in knowing what to expect during these first weeks:I'd also like to invite you to connect with your Recovery Thread for women who had surgery the same week as you at Recovery Progress Reports for July 19-25. Recovery Threads are wonderful for getting support, comparing notes, encouraging others, and keeping one another company.

Hi ginger_ginger, I’ve also had discharge that has been yellowish red and tends to pool up like you’ve described. It doesn’t really have an odor, but when it does it’s only when a lot has pooled up and is a light metallic/sterile smell. I had a light itch for a couple of days that has since gone away, pretty in line with when my incisions were itchy and have stopped itching. I figured it was my cuff healing. I still have the discharge but it seems lighter than it was in the first couple of weeks. I think it’s pretty normal as long as you don’t have any other symptoms going on that could indicate an infection. You can always reach out to your doc though if you want to be 100% sure. It’s what they’re there for
