Spotting 6 weeks post hysterectomy

Good morning,

I have not had any bleeding after 3 days post-op. Then suddenly yesterday I felt a gush and had some pinkish stains in my underwear. I relaxed all yesterday after I saw this. Today I am still spotting after I urinate. I have not felt any pain and it doesn't smell bad. Should I be concerned?

Thank you

Re: Spotting 6 weeks post hysterectomy

Your vaginal cuff may not have healed enough yet, you may need some treatment such as silver nitrate.

Contact your doctor

Re: Spotting 6 weeks post hysterectomy

Thank you GPMS. I did end up calling and spoke to a nurse who told me to rest the next few days and if it gets worse, turns bright red or heavy to give then a call back to be seen. My 6-8 week follow up is on June 30.

I didn't bleed the first week , than on second week I feel a gush and saw pinkish discharge like a light period too. Doctor said it's normal for some women.

Yes, I had the same thing around day 10. Haven't stopped spotting since (5 weeks postop). Spotting ranges from pink to red, but light so my doctor is OK with it.

I do hope I'm healing OK. My check-up is in 2 days.

I agree with contacting your doctor. It's not an emergency, but you did have a gush, something which we suggest should be reported. It could be that a pocket of fluid drained. Spotting should be on its way out by 6-8 weeks, so it'd be worth getting your doctor's take.

UPDATE: I went in for a cuff check (5 wks) and my cuff was open a few millimeters. It actually came apart during the exam and they whisked me away to the OR (bless her for clearing her schedule) where they removed some necrotic tissue and granulation so she could make clean sutures. Three weeks later I went back for a check and had a bit of granulation so she treated it with silver nitrate. I didn't feel anything for about 10 hours, then mild pain/stinging, not much, but enough to take tylenol.

My dehiscence was caused by a post-op abscess that sat on the cuff, pushing the tissue through the stitches. All of my original sutures were in tact.

It's been quite a ride. LOL

Update
I went for my 6 week which was really 7 and she said everything looked well but I had BV. I don't know how that happened. I haven't put anything even close to my vagina. Now Im taking antibiotics. It could be worse though so no complaints.

Re: Spotting 6 weeks post hysterectomy

Getting BV is not necessarily tied to anything you did or didn't do. Lack of estrogen (your ovaries can be sluggish for weeks after surgery due to the compromised blood supply) leaves the vaginal tissues dry-ish, and there's not as much of the good bacteria needed to keep the bad bacteria in balance.

Hopefully this dose of antibiotics will get rid of it without a recurrence before your ovaries get back up to speed.

Hi Stacey, my case is exactly like yours; spotting since day 10 and, now almost six weeks and still spotting but very very light, Doc checked me a week ago, said everything looks fine in the cuff and cleared me for sex (but i prefer to wait 8 weeks) she also was OK with the light spotting. I was wondering how it did went for you, when did it stopped? This spotting issue gets me anxius.
