I had my op on the 8th and had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy with my cervix, uterus and tubes removed (ovaries remain). I'm 42 and had to have it done as I had recurring CIN which they believe was multi focal so despite havinh Lletz and cone biopsy with clear margins, the precancerous cells kept returning with HPV positive.

The surgery was fine although the surgeon didn't come and see me until the following day (which I thought was a little odd as the survey was done by 1pm) and then I was discharged at 6pm the following day. I had a little bleeding and felt quite a bit of pain in my shoulders and stomach.

When I returned home, I was heavily bleeding. Literally blood was pouring. I called the hospital and was returned to hospital. I was put on a drip and given Tranexamic to reduce the bleeding. Nobody actually examined the wound and said that it was a collection of blood that was being released and nothing to worry about.
The consultant came to see me the following day at 6am and told me it was fine and I could be discharged when ready. That morning nobody took my obs, checked on me or anything. They just gave me my discharge papers and I got my bags and left.

This whole surgery was done privately in a private hospital. Given the cost I would have hoped they would have been attentive.

I now feel stupid for going back in with the bleeding and just feel I need to pull myself together and get on with things. I actually feel all over the place. The nurse said to me - "the hospital is no place to hangout". I was in tears. This is supposed to be one of the best private hospitals in London.

So all in all, my experience has been pretty sad.
Dear R,

Welcome and glad you found us.

Regardless of cost, you were treated poorly. Bleeding is worrisome - you had every right to be concerned. That nurse was beyond abrupt - and certainly lacked empathy, grace and compassion. Giving her the benefit of doubt, perhaps she was concerned about staying in a hospital and risking your chances of exposure to infection. Either way, your feelings as a patient need to be heard.

You may want to contact the hospital Chief Administrator to share your experiences.

I’m sorry you endured this treatment, but please try to focus on your mental and physical healing now.

Take care and be good to yourself.

Hospital Discharge Instructions

If you have questions, call the doctor’s office. Many questions can be answered by the nurse. You are not bothering them - you are a patient with questions! Knowledge is power.
Don’t wonder and worry - ask! ❤️

I’m so sorry you were treated so poorly. We’re in a vulnerable state when we come out of surgery.
I was told heavy bleeding was a warning sign, so I think you wanting to address it was the right thing to do.
I had outpatient surgery and was having horrendous pain and not able to urinate, so I had to go to the ER. I definitely wasn’t there to “hangout” and that was a cruel and rude for you to have to experience. I’m sorry! And I hope you find more comfort with family and friends.
Your concern was valid. <3

Had TLH laparoscopically on 2/8 with bladder sling. The surgery went well, but had horrible pain from the gas they pump in during surgery. Walking was the only thing that seemed to help. Stayed overnight in the hospital and went home 2/9 after I was able to empty my bladder. They put me on a medication to help tighten the bladder since it was so stretched out from iv fluids so I can empty it fully. I haven't had any pain medication besides ibuprofen since the day of surgery and feel fine, other than some residual shoulder pain from the gas. Hope everyone is recovering well!!

Welcome!
Happy you feel fine after your surgery!
Keep drinking as much water as you can as well as gradually increasing the amount you walk - both help!

Agreed sleeping can be very uncomfortable. I used a ton of pillows and made my bed so I’m sleeping a little upright. I’m a side and stomach sleeper so only sleeping on my back is not super comfy. Good luck!

Day 4 Post-op! I hadn't pooped at all until yesterday evening, and today I keep having to run to the bathroom. I'm glad my pipes are back to working, and I'm trying not to strain too much when I go.

My pain is well controlled as long as I stay on schedule with my pain pills, but since I can't take pills while I'm sleeping, I've been waking up around 6 am with the pain.

Still trying to take it easy, but it's frustrating that I can't even load the dishwasher!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Feb 08-Feb 14,2021

I had robotic surgery on the 9th and had everything removed, including sentinel lymph nodes. I would have posted sooner but I've been combining Oxycodone and Tylenol and am sleeping most of the time. I was at the hospital 5:45am for 8:30 am surgery. The nurses were great and kept assuring me that all would go well. And it did. I was in surgery 4 hours and woke up with a burning pain that was intense until they gave me Oxycodone. Ahhh, what a relief. The 1st time I urinated it burned but afterwards it was ok. I went home around 5pm with my husbands help and even felt well enough to have a bowl of soup. I started using Miralax on the 2nd day since I couldn't pass gas. It really helped and today I pooped twice. Only a fellow hystersister would understand. :-).

Great tip! Yeah, I didn't know peeing would be so difficult! Maybe tmi, but still haven't had a bowel movement & worried that's going to hurt.

Tried all the usual tricks running the tap, warm shower, walking about lots but nothing helped. By 8 pm I was getting really uncomfortable and thought I would need a catheter. Then a nurse educator suggested blowing bubbles in a cup of water, whilst tapping on my suprapubic bone. Confuses the brain apparently but it worked.
Peeing better today but happy to be on the other side. I hope everyone is doing ok and taking it easy.
