The pain was pretty bad the first 18-20 hours but I think I’ve got the pain medicine down. But I too am experiencing trouble with a very dry mouth. Almost choked on a saltine it’s so dry! I’ve got some gum and mints to try to help a d a popsicle has never ever felt so good! Best of luck to you as you al recover.
Glad to hear you’re home.

The trachea tube can get your throat rather sore and tickly and even
Cause coughing. Keep a glass of ice chips near by. They work as well as cough drops and they help a bit with hot flashes as well.

Keep drinking fluids and manage the pain by taking your meds exactly as prescribed
Hopefully your dry throat will ease up soon

It helps to understand what went on in surgery, and it's major surgery. You've had 5 sets of ligaments and many blood vessels cut as well as organs removed, and what was cut has been stitched or cauterized. All that internal trauma takes time to heal - it's not like getting over a stomach bug. Recovery really does have to be thought of in terms of weeks rather than days and we're our doctors' patients for up to 8 weeks with good reason.

Try a heating pad for your back and a soft ice pack for your swollen belly.
The numbness should go away with time.

Please don’t worry ....easier said than done I remember
Thanks so much for this answer.

Here's another question: is it normal to feel these waves of air/gas moving in my abdomen? I have read that they fill your abdomen with gas to do the surgery. My doctor/surgeon said he'd try hard to remove all of it. I guess that may be impossible. How then does the gas get out?

Hi AL,

Please don’t worry. The gas will pass through your posterior as things settle down.
Did your doctor recommend Gas-x and stool softeners?
Try Gently pressing a warm (not hot) soft cloth on your stomach to help disperse the gas bubbles.

Please read this article:
Gas Gas Gas

Keep walking and keep drinking water to pass gas more easily and naturally.

I went to ER with blood in my urine and everything was fine but I was EXHAUSTED after. I am way more swollen (3 days post op) and look like I'm 6 months pregnant. I can't even wear pants because it's so tender and huge. Is anyone else hugely swollen?

Oddly I'd lost me smell and taste 3 months ago due to covid and since recovery I can taste some things and smell some things!!! It feels like a miracle. I wonder if my brain is healing because of all the resting.

Thank you. I'm not worried. It is not uncomfortable when I feel it. Just wondered if it's normal and how the air will get out of there and you answered that question. I am definitely on stool softeners and take psyllium husk for fiber.

Thanks again. This forum is great!

I’m so sorry to hear about your adventure to the ER but I’m relieved you’re overall ok.
As for swelling - ugh! Forget about anything constricting / no pants worked for me unless they had an elastic waist and even that was iffy. Stick to long tee shirt nightgowns, boy shorts, shifts, anything non-constructing. The swelling is very common after surgery. Please read the article on Swelly belly I posted previously

So happy to hear your senses are returning! A great sign

Sorry to hear that. Glad there is nothing wrong in terms of blood in the urine. I am swollen but the same as I was when released. But maybe that's the same situation for you. They are saying that's normal.

Caring for Incisions

Please do not put any creams on to relieve itching or soreness without FIRST asking your own doctor.
Keep the area clean and dry. Do not wear clothing that rubs and can irritate your incision.

Do not take it upon yourself to clean anything

Each doctor has their own reasoning.

Was this is response to my specific questions about cleaning the incision? I'm confused. Since I'm not a paying member, the site is rather confusing to navigate with all the ads, etc. You wrote to keep it clean and dry then wrote don't take it upon yourself to clean the incision which seems to contradict that.
