Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Apr 26-May 02,2021

Ladies,
Most of you are near or at your second week!
You may find some symptoms have left but are replaced by new ones. Hang in there, it does get better!

Below are some topics of concern that begin to arise at this stage of recovery.

You may start to notice spotting that you didnít have after surgery, as stitches start to dissolve at the vaginal cuff. It can present as pink, brown or even some bright red. Your doctor hopefully addressed this in your discharge instructions, or like mine, may not have.

Where spotting is normal to recovery, itís important to know if you are filling a maxi pad in an hour or have a sudden gush of fluid, contact your doctor right away.

I was really surprised to suddenly experience this on the eighth day! But it is a normal part of healing and spotting can happen anytime during the recovery period. Some women spot, some donít, some only briefly, for others it can persist for a couple weeks or longer. It's a good idea to run any concerning symptoms by your doctor. As you are hearing repeatedly, we all experience our own unique recovery. Though it is a normal part of recovery, it can also signal you are overdoing. About this time you also may find a stitch when you wipe or go potty, oftentimes itís purple!

Helpful tips for week two:

For the gals who are getting antsy:

For the sisters who are navigating surgical menopause and hormones, I urge you to check out the Menopause and Hormone Thread, it's a great resource. (I shared a link with some gals last week to the surgical menopause thread. This menopause and hormone thread is better for hormone related questions. I don't have any experience in this area and not much help.)I encourage you to talk with each other too!

For those thrown into surgical menopause, these may be helpful:

10 days post op and suddenly itchy rash on my belly, legs and arm where they removed nexplanon. Called doctors and we arenít sure what/why a rash now. We arenít too concerned, but itís a frustrating new symptom. Part of it feels to me like it is anxiety over relaxing 🙄🤦Benadryl.

Nausea remains for me too. Especially when I first stand up. Prescribed Zofran.

Due to endometriosis pain, I was on narcotics throughout past 28 weeks!! Just stopped taking them several days ago. YES❤️ (Hysterectomy lap. And removal of cysts and endometriosis that was causing significant constant pain)

Having 4 and 6 year old boys when are difficult to keep from bouncing off or hugging my surgery site. They seem to memory dump the instructions to be careful throughout the day. I am getting lots of help and glad I said ďyesĒ to meals and help from friends.

The fatigue!!!!

I had twilight sedation when I had my colonoscopy. It's not bad. You don't remember anything from when you were out (at least that was the case for me), and the only part I did remember was when they were rolling me out and I was in post op (for the colonoscopy).

For me during my hysterectomy I didn't remember post op, and don't remember anything until the next morning. They kept me over night bc I had bowel resection and had been under for so long (9 hours) so not sure that my experience of anesthesia for the hysterectomy was "normal" if there is such a thing.

Hope this is helpful. You've got this.

So I'm 10 days post-op. Both ovaries were left, but everything else taken along with cyst removed from one ovary and a lot of cleaning up from Endo and other scarring. Physically, I am doing better than I expected. Emotionally and mentally, I'm a mess. Anxiety and depression are a daily thing for me since a teenager and treatment has been in place for that for a long time. This surgery has really thrown me off. I'm trying to remind myself that it's part of the process and won't last forever. Just need to know I'm not alone.

Oh you arenít alone... I had a very similar surgery with endo removal and ovaries left. I am on meds for depression. Iím feeling okay physically. But mentally I am flip-flopping. I decide to rest my mind races. I get up ... I need to sit down. I literally chase myself in circles forgetting what I was doing. Iím excited to feel a bit better then Iím anxious over the excitement. I want to hide under the bed. I feel guilty for resting then I feel guilty for feeling guilty. The dreams are intensely lovely and some are disturbingly awful. Itís like finding a mental equilibrium is an added challenge during this process. But our bodies went through so much. I called my counselor and scheduled an appointment ... and keep reminding myself to be gracious to myself and give me time. ...like you said it is part of the process... we gotta ride this wave into smoother waters. You arenít alone. It is difficult. We can do this!

Also @KYHysterSister2 I cried through my pre-op scared that a hysterectomy would throw me back into a dark depression - my doctor had some encouraging words about pain/depression and how this process might even lead to a better longterm outcome. We talked about some hormone/birth control that would not be a good choice for me because of their side effects on mental health. Knowing I had it on the radar with my medical team was reassuring. I just want to encourage you to have the support of your specialist, general physician and create a support network too.

KYhystersiser2 & Djelmer

Welcome to your recovery thread!

Iím so happy to see you for have already bonded

and are actively supporting each other!

Itís not always as easy to discuss the emotional struggles that accompany hysterectomies, whether you kept your ovaries or not. The hormone and emotional is easier to bear when you have someone who understands and endures it, too.

I hope for the both of you that your will see brighter days as the recovery moves forward. Iím also an anxiety sufferer, the first few weeks held much more emotional upheaval than expected.

Djelmer,
I also experienced a rash, on day 8, it was thought to be from the surgery prep they used to cleanse the skin.
Try keeping a small pillow handy to protect your tummy, shielding you from energy filled elbows, knees and feet.
As for the dreams-Wow, they were intense and so realistic, also for the first couple weeks, long after the anesthesia and other medications were out of my system.

KYhystersister2,
No, you are definitely not alone! This group was invaluable to helping me both pre and post surgery. Itís good to hear you are physically feeling better than expected. The emotional part was hard. Resting and idleness of body, allows the mind to be even more active than usual. Do you have a hobby or mellow activity you can immerse yourself in to keep thoughts from wandering where they need not during this time?

Getting outdoors in the fresh air were crucial to my well being. I hope you both are able to get up and keep moving despite the opposing forces that make difficult to do so.

I hope you are having a better day.
While there are days of two steps forward and one back, the overall trend should be steady improvement.
You mentioned a UTI and antibiotics, do you think a probiotic might be helpful? Antibiotics make me feel lousy on a good day, with sleepy bowels combined with beneficial bacteria kill off, that could be part of it.
Having both ovaries removed, wether you are using HRT or not, being thrown into menopause may be another culprit. Keep drinking copious amounts of water and walk when you can.

Iím at the same day as you and having the same menstrual cramping and peeing, not all of the time but off and on. Like bladder spasming. My doc told me this was normal part of recovery. Iím still finding that GasX is helpful even though Iím not extremely gassy, it helps ease digestion discomfort and bloating.

I canít speak to the acting ďfunnyĒ part but I am still riding an emotional rollercoaster that I wish would end. (Kept my ovaries!) Sigh, perhaps that has been the worst part for me. Going outside to walk around my house is helpful and Iím thinking that I need to find something else to occupy my mind. Things are super stressful right now bc we are moving to Virginia soon and I am not doing a darn thing as I usually would be (military)- I have packers/movers showing up in 2 weeks!
