Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

I am having pretty heavy bleeding. Actually just started again yesterday and with in the first few hours gave up on wearing "normal" over night heavy duty pads and switch to poise incontinence pads after bleeding though the others in under an hour.

As a big girl (nearly 280lbs) I worry about the side effects of Lupron or other hormones. I am also trying to quit smoking, so I will have to talk to the Dr about the risk of blood clots etc that might be caused by its use. But it sure sounds like its worth looking into.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

You're putting too much on your plate at once!! I applaud you for quitting smoking but maybe you could hold off on that until you get your fibroid issue under control? Emotionally there is only so much you can handle at once. I'm worried about you overwhelming yourself by trying to do too many things at once!

I urge you to do your research and talk to your doctor about your different options as soon as possible! The bleeding will just continue to get worse until you start to do some sort of treatment!

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Thanks everyone for the replies....I am also very anemic ,that is the main reason I am taking the lupron shots (3.75 ), I have two very large fibroids and my hemoglobin/iron are way to low to go into surgery, I will continue the shots until I go in June for my surgery.
I have been bleeding/spotting since I had the first shot two months ago.... when did most of you have your periods stop all together? my OB says it should stop after the second one.
Lots of hot flashes ,feeling very run down, heres hoping this is worth it.
Thanks for the words of encouragement, best of luck to all of you as well.

Anyone offered add-back therapy to help with hot flashes?

D~
My doc offered it (and I took the Rx just in case) but I haven't needed to take it. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, the hot flashes are really not bad for me. Stay tuned though...I'm due for shot #3 sometime next week.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

I had Lupron injections for 6 months last summer to try to ease the pain of my endometriosis. The Lupron is what drove me to get the surgery! I hated the side effects of the shot. In addition to the typical menapausal symptoms, I was taken to the ER twice because of this shot...once for shoulder pain that they thought was a blood clot, and another time for problems with my pancreas. All through through the injections, I had my monthly period (and I was on continuous birth control). I also had extreme depression.

I had a terrible time with Lupron, and side effects just got worse as time went on. I know that not all women will have the same experience as I did, but I do urge anyone looking into the shot to do a LOT of research BEFORE you get it.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Hey Lizardbrain, sounds like we are on the same path.... I just had my second shot, third on Jan 30th. I am having major hot flashes (lots through out the day) like every half hour, I can handle that, it's the tiredness I have a hard time with. I am severely anemic, I have had my period (all though lighter) since my first shot in Dec, Doc visit today, hemoglobin /iron very low, I get double shots of B12 and am on iron twice a day, trying to bring them up, I am a very busy Mom of four older teens, I can't be this tired all the time. The Doctors plan is Lupron until my surgery in June, trying to shrink large fibroids, and get my iron and my strength built back up before surgery. don't want to have to resort to transfusions.
How are you doing with the Lupron?
I don't want to take the add on hormones, my oldest daughter had ovarion cancer when she was twelve, she is a twelve year cancer survivor now,and doing well. I have instructed the Doc to remove everything, ovaries, tubes, ect during my hysterectomy...taking no chances.just can't wait to get this over with.

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Gems,
I guess I'm doing ok on the Lupron. The hot flashes are manageable...but of course as soon as I say that I get hit with a humdinger. Literally got ready for work this morning standing in front of an open window, scantily clad, IN JANUARY and was still melting. God I hope the neighbors can't see into my bathroom!!

I'm tired too. Bone tired. I am somehow managing to pull myself through my day but like you I'm a busy mom with a full time, stressful job and I doubt I could keep this up for six months! Hands full! My biggest gripes about the Lupron is the tiredness and what its doing to my skin! UGH! I look like I'm 13. BUT...what the fibroids are doing to me is far worse. My digestive system is a disaster because they have no room at all. My back is bothering me terribly. Fortunately my problem with hemoglobin has been resolved (I think...I should have my doc re-check)...I had an ablation in October and the bleeding has been minimal since then and since my second shot of Lupron...nothing.

On another note: I'm meeting with a DaVinci specialist on the 19th. Here's why. My sister had a complete Hyster via DaVinci and her doc teaches this method to other surgeons. He said he could do the procedure no matter the size of the uterus or fibroids. Too bad I don't live in the same state. But why am I taking this Lupron then?? We'll see what this specialist says. If he says no, I'm prepared to get a second opinion.

In the meantime, my doc says we'll know at the three month mark if the Lupron is or will work at all. If not, I'm done. Regular hyster and I'll opt for a tummy tuck too. I'm not one to suffer without some awesome benefit. Give me lemons and I'll make lemonade!!

It does sound like we're on the same path at the same time. I'll hold your hand if you'll hold mine!

Lizardbrain- I love your attitude. The Lupron is kicking my butt with the fatigue but I'm almost at the end of my journey

Re: Any one else taking Lupron injections to prepare for surgery?

Lizardbrain, I think you made the best decision when you chose to see a Da Vinci specialist. I just spoke with one myself. (She teaches others how to do it and doesn't do any other sort of surgery). She said even though my uterus/fibroids are very large that she could still do the DV surgery. Only thing she had to make sure of was that there was room between the bottom of my ribs/breast bone and the uterus to stick the robotic arms/cameras in. She said the lupron was an option if I wanted to try it, and that using it makes the uterus um...softer, but for the most part she only sees a 10 to 20% shrinkage, and that the shots are very expensive and she wasn't sure my insurance would ok them. So I am still iffy on using Lupron, especially now that the docs think there might be something wrong with my heart and kidneys.
