Food and Drink
Hi All, as I can't post in the post op forum yet I am hoping some ladies will be reading this. I am just wondering what did you find helpful immediately after surgery to eat and also drink. I know some ladies have trouble with carbonated drinks. Any ideas would be good to hear as I would like to get a few foods in that I will be able to digest post op.

Re: Food and Drink
Netmeffa, I was on a liquid only diet at hospital, so was happy to eat soft foods when I returned home. I drank v8 juice, had soup, applesauce, more soup. I also enjoyed steamed vegees, but don't add brocolli, cauliflower, or cabbage too soon; they cause painful gas. I had zucchini and carrot. Frozen green beans were also good; I steamed some and ate them like french fries.
I can't eat potatoes, but if you can, mashed potatoes are a favorite for some post-op.
I am glad I had a freezer full of soup for me and entrees for the family. Just had daughter make salad or steam some vegees, and son heated up dinner.

Re: Food and Drink
My DH made a big pot of soup the day I came home. Amazing and easy to heat up just what you need when you get hungry. I froze lasagna and a rice casserole. I cut them into meal sized squares and wrapped them separately. In the fridge I kept yogurt chocolate pudding cups (which I normally never buy but I'm glad I did). My appetite was almost non existent for quite a while so I tried to have things that were small and healthy. And I drank juice, water and tea. It's good to have some prune juice on hand to help with the first couple BM's. I also bought Gas X and Miralax so I wouldnt have to send someone out for them when i needed them. Wishing you the best with your surgery.

Re: Food and Drink
I didn't have much appetite for about a week. I ate applesauce, fruit cups, soup, and a lot of toast. Macaroni & cheese also tasted pretty good. In general, carbohydrates appealed to me more than protein or fat.
I have been eating a fiber bar every day, to help keep things moving. Someone posted elsewhere that fruit fiber works better than grain fiber, so I guess prunes/prune juice might be more effective.

Re: Food and Drink
My Dr told me to keep the fiber easy to digest so cooked veggies were better than raw for awhile. My appetite was awful right after the surgery so ensure really helped me to get some nutrition when I couldn't eat. Once my appetite came back I ate eggs, toast, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt. All of the above mentioned items were also things I ate. Oh, I was also put on a probiotic in addition to the stool softener, and then a laxative if necessary (I used miralax).

Re: Food and Drink
RIGHT after surgery, the hospital gave many of us "liquid" diet options, but after about 12 hours, I think it's mostly whatever you feel like.
As you said, avoid things that make you gassy or cause you constipation.
Otherwise, you'll probably want your personal comfort foods. What do you like when you first get over a flu? That sort of stuff.
I drank a lot of juice because I thought it would be good for me. I don't know if it really helped anything or not.
I had bought a lot of frozen foods and "special" packaged mixes for my hubby and son to make when I was unable to cook. Lo and behold, I was able to cook three days after surgery, so they didn't have to break into any of them. The only help I needed was with the heavy stuff. For example, I was able to make the batter for pumpkin bars, but someone else had to pour it into the heavy glass pan and put it in and take it out of the the oven.

Re: Food and Drink
Lots of good suggestions already! You might also really like some Beano or its' generic equivalent. You take a pill with food and it interacts chemically with the food to prevent gas from forming. I was having gas right after surgery, even with a liquid diet (broth, jello, juice) and it was really painful! The solid diet in the hospital still gave me gas, even though they weren't typically "gassy" foods. I was requesting GasX with every meal.
Once I got home, I added the Beano to the GasX at each meal and it seems to have helped tremendously.

Re: Food and Drink
Wow you were back to cooking 3 days after your op. Well there is no way I will be doing that whether I can or can't. My husband has 3 weeks off work and I am intending to let him learn the art of feeding us and 3 healthy hungry teenagers as well as keeping the house in some sort of livable state...lol

Re: Food and Drink
Netmeffa - I'm with you, Sister! Milk it for a bit. And don't overdo it too soon.
I had emergency dental surgery yesterday (I call it my pre-surgery surgery) and felt wonderful by the afternoon, but found I was really tired this morning....
My superwoman cape is definitely going to the cleaners for a while. :-)

Re: Food and Drink
I did not want to eat much the first few days home. I ate soup, puddings, cottage cheese, canned pears, and drank a lot of juices...
My fav was the cottage cheese and canned pears. I think I ate them at every meal and only had soup once or twice....
Good luck...
