How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
My work said a doctor's note is not necessary and has approved my time off. I don't have any pay during that time and my husband is out of work. I'm nervous about losing my job because the last person who took medical leave is no longer employed.
Another girl who had a laproscopy hernia repair was only allowed a week off and was told she had to come back to work. Oh, I forgot to mention I work for a small company and have worked there for 14 years. They have been hiring more full timers than they can handle. I guess the stress of my upcoming surgeries and loss of pay is making me feel unsecure. Guess it's time to take out a loan for security.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I'm lucky to not have that stress. I work for a state university and have good benefits. My doctor said I'd need 6-8 weeks off and my boss and HR Director said put in for 8 weeks with STD. If I go back at 6 weeks it will be easier for my doctor to write a release than for him to file an extension with STD. The summer sessions at the college aren't too busy so it's not much of a burden on coworkers.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I told my employer about my upcoming hyst and was very concerned about the timing of it since I had only been with my employer (very small company) for six months. They said "there is never a good time to have this type of surgery, but if you need to get it done, then go ahead and schedule it. Two days later, I was let go. No 30 day probation, no explanation, nothing. My very strong belief is that they didn't want to deal with my six week absence.

Can they do that?
What about the family medical leave act? Can they legally do that?

No, they can't fire you while you're on Family Medical Leave. Only thing is though, I think the law states that you only have to allow FMLA if you have 50 or more employees.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I praise God I work for a company that cares about their employees. I have been with this company nearly 8 years and am not having to take any vacation, sick or STD for my 6 week "vacation". I will receive my normal salary throughout.
I am planning on "working" from home during this time though as much as I can after I get back on my feet. My work is all computer related and I figure I am set up to work at home, have a company cell phone and will end up spending a lot of my down time surfing the net anyway.
I pray all of you have experiences this good with your employees. If you dont maybe its a good sign that it isnt the right place to be.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I have been with my company for only 4.5 years and just after I found out about my surgery (TAH 6/7/05) I was also notified that I would be taking over as office manager. I have this month to learn the job and then only 2 weeks off for surgery before I go back. The former office manager is leaving at the end of June. I hate to say but I am really more stressed about the job than the surgery.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I guess that I'm pretty lucky.....with missing so much work...they said do what you need to do. I have short term disablility that will help and a rider policy that will pay $100 a day while I'm in the hospital. Today was my last day and Monday is my surgery.
Feeling a little nervous since this is the 3rd date that I have have.
I cannot wait.....I've been on the pill for almost 3 months and am still on it and have my period.......This is the final straw for aunt flo!! lol

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
lowrider87,
I'm 2 weeks post op and I couldn't imagine going back to work fulltime right now. That time frame is pretty unrealistic for a TAH. If you can, speak to your management about more time off. If you rush your recovery, it could make things much worse for you.
I was supposed to work up to the day prior to surgery, but was in so much pain when my period started the Sunday before that I called in sick Mon - Wed, then had a personal day for the day before surgery. Told my boss that I was sorry, but I just couldn't do it. So I actually ended up taking more time off.
We've had intermittant layoffs at work and I'm a little nervous being out for so long. When I told my boss that, he promised they would try to looked stressed when upper management was around. I'm on STD until the middle of June, but will probably try to work from home for a couple hours a day starting June 1. Just so they don't forget that I still work there.
Of course when I told them I would be out and turned over my workload to my co-workers, I told them to call if they had any questions or problems, but they had to give me a week first. Exactly one week to the day after surgery work called. They actually had the problem earlier, but didn't call until the week was up.

How is your work reacting to your extended time off?
I'm very concerned about my job but not enough to postpone surgery. I went to work for a small company as a sales rep/merchandiser about 16 months ago. The company was a distirbutor for a very large company. Four weeks ago the large company bought us out and now everyeone works for them.
Of course they said we would be one big happy family and our benefits would greatly improve and our lives would now be wonderful. The first thing they did was to tell everyone any vacation time coming would not be honored. No vacatiions until next year.
I looked in the employee handbook and it said we were allowed up to three months medical leave with no pay but they would continue to pay your insurance. The catch was you had to be with the company one year. So it is their call if they will honor my time with the original company. I called my new boss whom I don't like at all and he said the same thing, never a good time, we will work with you. I don't believe it for a minute.
Had been saving for a down payment on a new vehicle so I have about two months salary which will see me through, I think. If I have to wait to find another job then I will have a huge problem.
Feel positive if this would have happened with the previous owners they would have held my job and would have been very supportive. The new owners are worth about 60 million and I'm just a nobody. Of course I could fight a company this size if I chose to do so.
IMHO if this was a surgery a man needed it would be a different story.
Any comments????
