Advocating for yourself (something I didn’t really prepare for)

Hi ladies!
I just had my surgery yesterday and had to stay overnight because I had some major pelvic floor work too. I haven’t had a bad experience here but I think it could have been if I weren’t advocating for myself. Thankfully I am an LPN (Hairstylist now but still licensed and several years of healthcare work) and know a little bit of what to ask for.

I am on a surgical progressive floor. The only hospital overnights I’ve done were when I’ve had my babies. I feel like the OB floor is more used to anticipating our little feminine needs so I’ve never had to ask for much. At the risk of sounding like an extra needy little princess I’m going to share some things that I’ve asked for that I assumed would just be offered. I’ve worked in the hospital and know how overloaded the nurses are so I’ve made sure to ask when the nurse or cna have been in for a routine check (with exception of more pain meds)

Things that I’ve had to ask that weren’t just readily offered:

More pain meds
Gas meds (I am so painfully gassy but can’t pass it)
Stool softener
Food (I’m surprisingly ravenous)
More pillows to prop things up.
An abdominal binder (GAME CHANGER!)
A pad and wash cloths to clean myself up. (can’t stand laying on a bloody bed pad)

With that being said please don’t feel like you’re putting anyone out but try to be patient too. The poor nurses most places are overloaded with patients so they kinda of only know the barebones minimum about your chart. I just know how my mom is as a patient. She won’t ask for a thing because she thinks that they already know everything that’s going on and she doesn’t want to bug them. Good luck and good vibe sent to you all.
