Hysterectomy seems logical or am I missing something.
I just had an ultrasound today that confirmed that fibroids are back. I have been experiencing an enlarged uterus and pain.
I haven't talked to an OB/GYN yet. So we haven't gone over my options (my general doctor ordered the u/s) I know there are alternatives.
I am 38 and have had issues with fibroids since age 23 and had my first myomectomy at 25. I had a second one removed when i had the c-section of my first child at 27. I have since had a second child and I am done having children. (had a tubal ligation at my second c-section) Now I am 38 in a lot of pain (that sometimes goes away but it always creeps back) Any other solution the fibroids will come back right? The report from the ultrasound today sounded like a had a large orange sized fibroid having a party with 4 or 5 smaller fibroids.
I don't know what the doctor is going to recommend but I want to know if I am crazy leaning (before even seeing a doctor) having a hysterectomy. I am sick of being in pain. I don't want to have another myomectomy if it means I will have to have a hysterectomy in 5 years. I have already had 3 other major uterine surgeries (a myomectomy and 2 c-sections) I have always recovered pretty well. (though the pain was horrible) i want to know the reasons for me to ovoid having a hysterectomy because I am having a hard time seeing any reason. Though the thought of having a hysterectomy makes me cry uncontrollably.

Hi Blueberryice
You sound like you know what you want. My advice is to write it all down so you have all of the reasons at your fingertip when you have your OB/GYN app. Don't forget to add the (logical) reasons you would prefer not to have other procedures.
Good luck

Re: Hysterectomy seems logical or am I missing something.
Hi, Your story is so similar to mine!
I was diagnosed with fibroids in my late 20s, had a myomectomy at age 30. Fast forward 11 years, I had more fibroids, bigger and badder than ever with heavy bleeding, etc.
Some people prefer to do another myomectomy but for me, there's no way I was doing a 3rd procedure (I'm at least 10-15 years out from menopause, so it's safe to assume I would need another procedure at some point within that time frame) and my doctor said I couldn't anyway, my uterus would have been swiss cheese. So the only course was hysterectomy.
Unfortunately, this confirms I really can't ever have children which is hard for me to deal with emotionally, but from a logical standpoint it was 100% the right decision for me. I kept my ovaries since they were asymptomatic. I had the cervix removed since there was a fibroid on it and I had a couple weird paps. No regrets there, I can't tell the difference with it gone.
I think your view point is perfectly logical and I would be shocked if a physician does not agree with you. Hysterectomy seems to make the most sense. I don't see the value in doing a procedure now only to end up with another one in a few years.
Good luck!

Re: Hysterectomy seems logical or am I missing something.
From reading here on the board, I think you're options are probably hysterectomy, myomectomy, or uterine artery embolization. Lupron may be able to shrink your fibroids to make them smaller for surgery, but I don't think it makes them disappear.
I didn't have fibroids, I had adenomyosis, but I had tried other less invasive options (surgical and non surgical) and was done having kids and like you, was hoping for a more permanent solution.
If you're not emotionally ready, give yourself time to feel comfortable with the decisions and get a couple of different opinions (I had 3 before I really felt confident about my decision, then I felt excited that I was about to move on with my life!). I feel like the benefit of multiple opinions isn't so much that your doctor may be making the wrong decision (though that could happen I guess), but that if 2-3 doctors all tell you the same thing, you really gain a lot of confidence and don't play mind games with yourself about making the wrong decision.
Good luck with your appointment(s) and your decision!

I hope I am not too late in directing your research to MRI focused ultrasound to ablate your fibroids. Recovery time is only a few hours of rest after a nice lunch.
