Upcoming hysterectomy 7/7: Scared! Absolutely scared!
I'm having a TAH on 7/7. Reading a lot which is good but I'm reading more bad experiences. Has anyone had a TAH/BSO with good experience? I completely understand everyone heals differently and I understand the first week is very hard but....any good stories? I'm terrified! I've never had any type of surgery in my 47 years! I have fibroids and clots that are the size of oranges! I don't have too much pain during my period but I also think I have a high tolerance (I hope!). Do they fill you with gas and/or air for a TAH? I'm so scared that I really wish it was done and over with! I'm trying not to think about it but that's not working! I know everyone says, I wish I did this sooner, as I'm saying that now! I have never stayed as a patient in the hospital either! I have never been pregnant. I also never been fertility tested. I didn't want someone to say to me.... I'm sorry but you can't have babies. So I left that in Gods hands and needless to say, never been pregnant. Sometimes I think I should have gotten tested. I'm sorry for rambling....just lots of thoughts going through my head! Please, I need reassurance! Thanking you all in advance!

Re: Scared! Absolutely scared!
I had my surgery last Wednesday after feeling just like you, totally scared and didn't know till the second she put the mask on my face if I should go through with it. But now 6 days post I feel good right now but trying to take it easy. The only big disappointment was that I was 95% sure I was having it done Laproscopically but then they discovered it was also attached to the bowel and they had to suddenly do a TAH. Do you have many symptoms?

Re: Scared! Absolutely scared!
Me, me! *jumps up and down waving one hand in the air*
I had a TAH/BSO with a three-day hospital stay. I hadn't stayed overnight in a hospital since I was an infant and was at least as worried about the hospital stay as I was about the surgery itself.
It all worked out just beautifully. :-) I lucked into one-half of a semi-private with a quiet roommate, and the nurses were absolutely sweet. I was pretty loopy from the anesthetics and narcotics the first day after surgery, but by the second day I was walking multiple laps around the ward by myself. The rest of the time I spent sitting upright in an armchair reading. (Bring books with you!)
By the third day I was off narcotics, eating solid food and beginning to get bored. My doctor and I agreed it was time to go home.
I live alone and had no trouble taking care of my cats and myself. I went for lots of short walkson flat ground and spent time sitting outdoors sewing and reading. I sat upright comfortably at my desktop computer. I prepared food for myself and the cats, washed a few dishes at the sink and kept the litter box scooped. Other than that, I let the housework go, as I'd scrubbed the place up pretty well before surgery.
The first week I took both ibuprofen and naps regularly, the second week less so. I can honestly say that I never had any real pain, just soreness and twingey-ness.
By my third week I was ready to start walking up and down hills again, which meant that I could get to the supermarket and restock on yogurt - or anything else I wanted, as long as I carried less than 10 lbs home at a time. :-)
By the time I saw my gyn onc at four weeks, I was going for 1-2 hour hikes on wooded trails. I went back to work at a part-time desk job the next day, plus I got my lift limit raised to 30 lbs.
At six weeks *all* my restrictions were lifted. I had to start off slowly and cautiously on abdominal exercise and lifting more than 30 lbs, but by eight weeks my body felt normal again. :-)
I had a really great experience, and I hope you will too!

Re: Scared! Absolutely scared!
I had my TAH on 5/22. In full disclosure, I am 39. While chunky and clearly not working out as much as I should have been, I did enjoy walking and pilates. My faith kept me calm before my surgery, but I was very worried about after surgery because I really didn't know what to expect. My gall-bladder surgery 5 years ago was done laparoscopically and healed very quickly. The thought of having such a long incision really worried me. The doctors came to get me for surgery and next thing I knew, I was waking up in my room. No lie, those first few times getting up were tough, but with the pain meds it really wasn't horrible. My doctor is one that doesn't like to send people home too early, so I was there for 4 nights. At first, I didn't like this but in hindsight, I am so glad he did. That gave everything time to begin to set and heal, so that by time I came home moving around wasn't as difficult or painful as I feared. There are several nurses in my family including my mom. Their advice and the doctors orders were to walk. I truly think that really helped. The doctor also had me get out of bed and sit in the chair in the room. In coming home, things have gone smoothly. My husband, daughter, SIL, brother, and parents have been tremendous helps making sure that I am able to rest while they cook, clean, and tend to the house. Still make sure I get up and do a lot of walking. Overall, there has been very little pain now that I am home. There have been moments though where I hurt, but with meds, it was managable. My biggest issue has been the itching. There are moments where I have lots of energy and moments of little energy. When people ask about this surgery, I say hands down it was the best decision for me. Have had cycle issues for years! Ended up with a fibroid and cancer of the uterus ( stage 1). It has been wonderful to not have to worry about accidents!!!! I wish you the best.

Re: Scared! Absolutely scared!
I completely understsnd what you are going through, I was the same way. My surgery was three weeks ago and so far, so good. I think the reason you hear bad stories is because those people are having problems. Those who have good surgeries don't come here. Remember, about 500,000 women have hystectomies every year.
I also hear women say they wish they had done it sooner. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to heal. My doc said to do nothing the first week, so I didn't. I'm confident everything will be fine. The waiting and worrying is the hardest part. Take care.

Upcoming hysterectomy 7/7: Scared! Absolutely scared!
Oh stomsick!! I wish I could hug you right now!!! I had my surgery 5 weeks ago & I, too, was terrified! I had never had surgery, never been in the hospital, nothing!! My experience was wonderful (and I'm not just saying that!) When I got to the prep area I just kinda crumpled on the bed & started sobbing. The nurses were so so sweet & patient & talked me through everything. They told me they put a memory blocker in the iv so you don't remember and let me tell you.....my hubby says I was awake and being silly but I don't remember being wheeled into the OR, I remember bits and pieces of being in the operating room (before the surgery) I remember thinking how cute & small the operating room was (not at all what I expected) I remember joking & laughing with the nurses while I moved to the table & them putting the mask over my mouth & telling me to take deep breaths and that's all I remember till I woke up in recovery. I wasn't in any pain, I remember I kept asking the same 2 questions over & over again....."Is Dr. Edwards ok?" (My surgeon lol...he loved thzt) and "is it really over or am I dreaming this?" Honestly it was a wonderful experience & I'd do it again in a heartbeat. My recovery has been wonderful as well. I'm being completely honest when I tell you all that. I pray that your surgery & recovery go as wonderful as mine! !!!!!
