New Here... Surgery Scheduled In a Few Weeks

Hi Everyone!

Scared newbie here.... thank you all for all the information you have all had to share. This site has been a world of information and you have all been so nice and supportive to one another. Nice to know I am not alone.
My surgery is scheduled for October 15th; my pre-op on October 8th; and my appoint with my Gyno on September 25th. According to my paperwork; I'm scheduled for an abdominal supracervicalw/BSO. They are taking everything but my cervix.

While I'm not really scared of the pain per se, the part that is skeeving me out is that drain thingy. My mom had her surgery at age 47, just like me, and she said that was the worst part. Does everyone get one and how bad is it when coming out??? I also remember her wearing a binder for support and having on elastic stockings. Are these something that they still do post surgery and should buy now or do they provide in hospital?

Also coming home from hospital -- is it better to try to go into bed or lay in the recliner. I am trying to convince my hubby that me, the "Princess" would probably be more comfy sleeping at her new "throne" in the living room versus trying to get into bed??? We found a nice one at the store and I'm thinking it would be easier for me, but not sure??? Your thoughts please???

Many thanks everyone! Sorry if these are dumb questions or have been on previous posts!!

I didn't have a drain or wear a binder. I only had to wear the stockings in the hospital and they provided those. Everybody's different so I don't know which would be more comfortable for you. I was more comfortable propped up in bed than trying to get in and out of the recliner. There are no dumb questions!

Same answers as Ohmightyv. No drain, no binder. Not even a catheter came home with me.

My recliner wasn't bad, but it's one of the old kind you have to push on the foot to get it to go down. I didn't have the strength, so I'd be stuck in the chair until DH released me. Make sure you can reach and use a control to get that foot rest up and down easily with little to no effort. If you can't use the recliner easily, stick to the bed or couch.

The elastic stockings are to help with circulation..
My pre-op is Oct 8 also, with TVH (ovaries remaining) on Oct 12..

Wishing you a succesful surgery & quick recovery! I'll be thinking of you

I decided to stay on the firm couch for the first couple days home from the castle, then climbed the stairs & went to my own wonderful bed! But it is wherever you are the most comfortable.

I didn't have a cath, a drain, or binder from the hospital, but there were a couple nights that I decided to use a binder I'd had from a previous surgery (so I could sleep on my side more comfortably). The 'support hose' are given to you in the hospital to prevent blood clots and help circulation.

There are no stupid questions, so ask away. Knowledge is power and you'll get that from reading and asking! Also, what your mom went thru when she had her hyster may not apply to you, even though you are the same age as she was. Times change and so do procedures, techniques, etc.

Wishing you the best with your pre-op time and your recovery after.
