Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

Should I find it strange that I wasn't given any kind of bowell prep at all? Just nothing to eat after midnight the night before surgery.

Re: No bowell prep?

and

I didn't have to do bowel prep before my surgery. I ate lightly the day before, and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. It's important that you follow your doctor's orders to the letter to avoid the possibility of having your surgery postponed. You can call to double check that you don't have to do a bowel prep if you are having any doubt about it.

Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

Re: No bowell prep?

Bowel prep is usually only for colonoscopies and other procedures involving your GI tract. You're good to go!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

Not quite - sometimes women are told by their doctors or hospitals to do bowel prep the evening before their hysterectomies. And sometimes not. I wasn't myself. I was told clear liquids only after 5 PM, nothing to eat or drink after midnight. When I arrived at the hospital, there was a nurse waiting for me with a Fleet enema! That was over with quickly, however. :-)

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

Hi!
I go for my surgery on Tuesday and I was not given a bowel prep. I have to do a liquid diet for 2 days, however. Which sucks because today is Easter and I can't enjoy it. I had a hysteroscopy done in January and my body was not happy about it. I ended up in the ER from vomiting. I would just suggest, based on my experience, that you eat lightly with easily digestible foods today. Good luck tomorrow. You will be in my prayers.

I have to do one. I'm having DaVinci. Not sure if that is a factor or not, but it was part of the brochure, so at least around here, all DaVinci surgeries have it.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

I do have to do one, but based on what my surgeon was saying, it's precautionary. I've had 2 C-sections and my uterus might be adhered to my colon now. I'm also having a hernia repaired, so if anything does happen, I already have that other surgeon in the room and one doesn't have to be called in.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

How strange! My doctor told me hat my surgery will probably be after 12 on 4/20 so I'm welcome to wake up at 3am to eat a snack bc I just need to not eat for 8 hours. I'm also having the DaVincj assisted LTH and right oophorectomy

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/17: No bowell prep?

i wish I had taken a fleets day b4 surgery as I ate normally. Very uncomfortable po day #2 - required fleets which prob could have been avoided if done preop. Po day5 and bowels not quite normal yet. This has been the worst part- little to no pain, no nausea and scant vaginl bldg otherwise. Still having hot flashes. Would love to hear from others 5-7 days out.
