Upcoming hysterectomy 1/25: Stairs post-op

Hi ladies, my surgery is scheduled for Jan 25th. I’m having laparoscopic surgery due to having endometriosis and all the scar tissue. She will be removing both ovaries and tubes. Any way....are stairs an issue after surgery? I have a 2-story house and that means 16 steps up to my bedroom. Did anyone have trouble with stairs? I’m not planning to run races up and down but I’d love to sleep in my bed if I can. Thanks!

Re: Stairs

I'm not sure but I would guess that as long as you are careful, go slow, and plan on staying upstairs for a bit it should be okay especially since you are able to have a laproscopic so those are smaller incisions. You could ask your doctor and see what he has to say about it but my guess is as long as you aren't going up and down it should be okay. I had laproscopic surgeries in 2008-2009 and I had 14 steps down and it hurt but was doable. Everyone heals differently though. i got a cooler to keep filled with drinks and snacks and such in my room next to my bed for after surgery.
You're almost there!!

Re: Stairs

Most people who I have seen post were able to do stairs with few problems. My dr assured me that I could do them from day one, as long a# I went carefully and used the handrails. I was able to do them several times a day, I didn’t find it painful or uncomfortable.

Re: Stairs

I had an LAVH and no problems at all with stairs, including right after I was released from the hospital. I think if you take them carefully, you should be fine.

My Drs instructions regarding stairs mirrors what Coughy's dr told her. I had a TAH in August 2015. We have several stairs in our home even from the garage. Our main floor is technically our second story. From day one, I took my time, taking a step at a time.

Re: Stairs

I have 15 stairs up to my bedroom too. Stairs were no problem. Take them slow, use the rail, and know where your feet are.

Re: Stairs

Hi Carmen3049 -

I had a TAH BSO with a 6-inch vertical incision. I did not have any problems with stairs. I took them very slowly and held on to the railing. The first few days DH walked beside me.

Follow your doctor's instructions - he or she will let you know if it is an issue for you.

Upcoming hysterectomy 1/25: Stairs post-op

I have 16 stairs as well. Eight up, landing, them another eight. I had an LAVH everything except ovaries taken on 12/19. Came home the afternoon of 12/20. Our master bed is upstairs. I was able to s-l-o-w-l-y take myself up the stairs. For the first few days my husband walked behind me going up and in front of me going down (in case I fell) and I took one stair at a time. I felt shaky going up and down, but had no issues and honestly think it was more the narcotics than anything. Talk to your dr & see what their recommendation is. But honestly I feel like going up and down 1-2 times a day helped me feel active without over doing it. She did tell me not to go up/down more than two times per direction per day?

Re: Stairs

I specifically asked my Dr and she said no issues at all, take it easy if I find going up and downstairs tiring (I live ins a townhouse) limit it for the first few days. Overall my Dr is very upbeat in terms of....try things slowly and if they feel ok, don't over do or over-use anything. My restrictions are lifting (of course) and no exercising until after she examines me at 2 weeks - only short walks around the house or a short stroll with a companion at a slow pace, but only if I can manage.
