4 weeks post BSO (Kept Uterus) No menopause symptoms, is HRT necessary?

I had a BSO on June 16th and so far I haven't had any symptoms of menopause. I'm 47, and my OB and I discussed HRT, but she says because of my age she doesn't want to put me on hormones unless I do start having menopausal symptoms.

Has anyone here experienced menopausal symptoms weeks or years after surgery?

and

It's nice to have you join us!

I know that there are women who don't start having menopause symptoms right after their ovaries are removed. Hopefully someone who can relate from experience will be along to share.

If you do end up using hormone therapy, you'll need to have a combination of estrogen and progesterone, since taking estrogen alone puts you at a greater risk of developing endometrial cancer.

Best wishes as you heal from your surgery!

Re: 4 weeks post BSO, No menopause symptoms, is HRT necessary?

Hi-
I just had my follow up yesterday after having surgery on July 11.
The hot flashes have started but that is the only issue I am having and heard they may go away. I did cry a few times for no reason.....

I thought I wouldn't have to start hormones but due to other reasons my dr. wants me to use the Mirena IUD which will put off progesterone and to use an estrogen patch 2 times a week. Or I can take pills- estrogen and progesterone and then will wean me off as I approach a menopausal age...But I also have uterine issues and this will help prevent cancer and osteoporosis.

It depends on the woman and how much estrogen, progesterone and other androgens her body produces. Estrogen and other sex hormones are stored in the fat tissues of the body, so you may have reserves that have not been depleted yet.

I went without systemic HRT until about 13 months after my TAHBSO because I was afraid of it causing me to develop breast cancer, but when the surgical menopause symptoms (hot flashes, sleep issues, emotional storms, etc.) got to the point where I couldn't deal with them anymore, I started the systemic HRT. I did start local HRT about four months after my surgery because of extreme vaginal/vulvar atrophy.

Now that I'm on the HRT, the emotional storms, and sleep issues have backed down, but I'm still struggling with hot flashes.

I hope everything continues to heal smoothly for you.

Re: 4 weeks post BSO, No menopause symptoms, is HRT necessary?

I had a LAVH and removal of both ovaries on 3/29/17. According to hormone tests via blood work my body was still producing estrogen until my latest labs on 7/7/17. According to the blood work I have finally just crossed over into menopause range for my FSH (26) and Estrodiol (27). I along with my doctors were concerned that I may have been dealing with Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS) that was still producing estrogen. However, since I've finally started experiencing some menopause symptoms (brain fog, joint pain, backache, moodiness, and some mild hot flashes) I think I'm finally in the clear with worrying about ORS.

My surgery was due to endo so I need to be in menopause for 3 months (per surgeon) before adding estrogen HRT back in. My gyn currently has me on a progesterone only bc pill to offset the effects of the estrogen in my body from flaring up any traces of endo that may have been left. HRT will definitely be a balancing act for me as I'm only 45. My doctors have told me that I still need the benefits of estrogen to protect me against osteoporosis and heart disease.

Re: 4 weeks post BSO, No menopause symptoms, is HRT necessary?

I’m a little late to this party. What does BSO mean? Sorry I’m new here. I had an oopherectomy in February 2012. I still have my uterus. I had breast cancer (er/pr 100+). I never had any menopausal symptoms. This year however I have gained weight, depressed, brain fog, insomnia. You name it, I have it. Except for my libido (and hot flashes), I don’t have a problem at all there. Drs suspect it’s my thyroid. I just had a full panel done yesterday. But I’m wondering if it’s possibly my lack of sex hormones that is causing my thyroid to be out of whack and causing all of my symptoms now.

BSO stands for Bilateral Salpingectomy Oophorectomy. BSO happens when the surgeon removes both of the ovaries and fallopian tubes at one time. LSO or RSO means one ovary and it's tube were removed together (Left or Right).

Thank you! I just came across the acronym in other threads and figured it out. Now I know I am BSO *face palm*

Re: 4 weeks post BSO, No menopause symptoms, is HRT necessary?

I found this very helpful. My surgery is in 2 weeks where I will go through surgical menopause. My ovaries are my issues along with a fibroid and awful uncontrollable periods. I am 47 I have a blood clot history so I will be hoping to control it holistically. I truly don’t know what to expect.

(((llparsons)))

Please bear in mind that this special forum is intended for our very small membership of ladies who still have their uterus. Therefore, their experiences and - more importantly - their hormone requirements after ovary removal will be very different as they haven't had a hysterectomy.

To receive support and information from ladies who can relate to your situation, you can use our Hormone Central or No Ovaries - No Hormones - Managing Menopause forums, both of which are dedicated to hysterectomy members.

We're sending positive thoughts for your upcoming surgery!
