So many questions, where to begin?

Hi. I am scheduled to undergo a total hysterectomy on 26 November. I have so many questions. Mine will be an abdominal. What is involved (cutting wise) with removing the cervix? I already suffer a little incontinence. Will that be any worse, or even improved, after recover, or does it make no difference? Does everyone experience wind afterwards, and why is this? Thanks Angel....[/font]

So many questions, where to begin?

Hi,

I didn't have my cervix completely removed. But here is a link toKinds Of Hysterectomy Surgeries.

I think that whether or not your incontinence will be improved, depends on what is causing it now and what kind of repairs you will be having, if needed.

I had my surgery due to adenomyosis, a very large uterus with multiple fibroids. My uterus was pressing on my bladder so that it couldn't expand and hold much more than a couple of tablespoons. Having my uterus removed got rid of my incontinence and allows my bladder to function normally again.

I think it is very common to experience gas after surgery. This is because the bowels quit working during surgery from the anesthesia and pain meds.

I hope this helped.

s and Best Wishes,
Kay

So many questions, where to begin?

Angel,

I did not experience much "wind" at all. But I would get a strong gas cramp as things moved into my bowel on its way out. That only lasted a week or so tho. I bought GasX and found I didn't even need it.

Having a TAH may bring more upset than the LAVH I had, but when I had my C-SECs years ago I only had gas trouble the first week as well, and that revolved around the intestines getting going again. Gas is the first thing they produce.

I wish you all the best with your surgery and recovery

Hi Angel -- I also have a little incontinence. I used to take Detrol and switched to VESIcare in June. The VESIcare is doing a better job, I think.
I too have wondered what effect the hysterectomy would have on it. When I asked my dr. before the surgery, she made it sound more negative (i.e. bladder problems could result after the surgery), but I am still hoping that maybe it will be better. I had a TAH 4 weeks ago with a large fibroid, so I am thinking that not having all that inside me should certainly help the bladder, too. I can tell you that it will take awhile before you can tell, if you are like me. I still have pressure, gas, constipation, etc. going on down there, so it is not back to normal yet. [Although the surgery itself and recovery has not been bad at all, it is a challenge not to do too much when you feel better and pay for it later!]
Feel free to ask more of your questions -- Laurel
