Bad cold prior to surgery

I am scheduled for a LAVH on 1/13, but have suddenly developed a horrible cold. I am having trouble breathing, etc.
Does anyone know if they can still do surgery when you are sick? I am kind of afraid to be put out while being so sick.

Thanks,
Deb

Oh my gosh...I was going to post this same question. I keep thinking, I CAN'T BE SICK. My surgery isn't until the 21st, but still, I don't want my surgery canceled because of it.

It's going to depend on your surgeon and your general health. I had a small cold and we still proceeded. Start nursing that cold now and hopefully you can get over the worst of it. Big hugs.. .See you on the post op board!

Thanks for the info. I am calling my dr. in the morning and see what she says. I also have fibromyalgia and arthritis so I know my recovery will be a little more difficult.
Will keep in touch.

Bad cold prior to surgery

I too had a slight cold before surgery. I was actually very concerned because when I would lay down, I could no longer breathe out of my nose, it would completely stop up. The nurses and doctor noticed this right before they took me back for surgery, and they gave me a little bit of Afrin nosespray to open my nose back up and then took me back to the OR. I think the doctors usually work with you on slight issues like this, unless it seems to be a larger problem than just the simple cold. Gotta ask your doc to make sure, though. Good luck!

Bad cold prior to surgery

Not only did I start my period two days before my surgery, but I caught a cold. I had a really bad sore throat, sniffles, and lots of drainage when I laid down. I called my doctor to see if the surgery would still go on and he told me that I wasn't getting out of it.

However, the day of my surgery the anesthesiologist and I talked for twenty minutes. He assured me that the drainage wouldn't be a problem and I will still be able to breath when they put the tube in. Make sure you have a list of the medications that you have taken the week prior to your surgery so that you can give it to him/her. Tell them the days and the dosages. This helps alot. He was really comforting and made me feel good about the surgery since I was so nervous with the cold.

After the surgery, believe it or not....ALL of my cold symptoms went away. I didn't have the sniffles or sore throat, or persistent coughing. The only problem was that the mucous dried up and I had the hardest time coughing it up (not to be gross). He hurts like heck to cough so it took some time for me to get that out of my system. You will be fine. Ultimately the anesthesiologist will make the last decision if your surgery will go on. If he feels that you are okay to be put under, he will do it. Another determining factor will be if you have a temperature. I didn't have one so that was a good thing. If you have one and it's slightly high, that can be a problem. Good luck!

THanks for all of the responses; I was just going to post this same question! I have not had a cold all fall/winter and today I wake up with the sniffles! I think it will be okay though.

Thank you for the reassurance!

Bad cold prior to surgery

I did not have a cold but, I did wake up with Sinus drainage. My sinuses drained the entire time I was in the hospital(2 1/2 days). The Dr had to order sinus meds. to help me dry up. I had not symptoms prior to my surgery.

((( Deb )))
It's good that you're planning to call your dr. This close to surgery, you need to have anything that you take approved by your dr to avoid possible reactions or complications at surgery

I got a bit of a cold before my surgery and my dr said that unless I was running a fever or could not breathe well enough, surgery would proceed. It worked out well for me; I hope that all goes well for you too.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the concern. I called the Dr. this morning and they have postponed my surgery and am waiting to hear when they get it rescheduled.
I cannot breathe thru my nose at all and am coughing. So, I think it is best it gets rescheduled.
