Myomectomy vs Hysterectomy (UPDATED 5/29 - decided on partial hysterectomy)

This came on suddenly that I have a few fibroids one the size if uterus. Currently bleeding non stop with some pain. Which surgery should I choose? If I leave my uterus will I have to do this again if they come back? I'm going to be 37. Husband and I firm on not wanting kids, felt this way my whole life. My ovaries would be left. I'm overwhelmed. Please help. Scared.

Hi Jen Bunny. I am 46 and learned in July that I had a 10 cm fibroid that grew to 14 cm by March. I had no other major symptoms besides pressure and a moderately heavy flow. My uterus was the size of a 6-month pregnancy.

I'm not qualified to offer advice on which surgery to choose. I can say I was initially against surgery and didn't want to get a hysterectomy. I found out recently that aggressive fibroids run in the family, (5 aunts and 6 of 8 cousins - one had to wear pads every day and cover her furniture with towels). I and other family tried natural options to try to shrink them (tea tree extract, vitamin D, diet changes) but they kept growing fast. The smaller one causing the pressure was near the cervix, possibly out of range for UFE.

My doctor is experienced in alternatives but recommended hysterectomy due to the rapid growth. Had I found them sooner, we would have tried a different treatment, but may have ended up here eventually. None of my friends and family that had this done regrets the decision.

I can also say that in my experience, the surgery was not as scary as I expected. Pain felt like strong cramps and gas. The resources on this site are excellent and the administrators are very good at encouraging us to get information from reputable sources. I hope it helps to know you are not alone!

Thank you. I am afraid if I do the lesser surgery it could return because runs in family. But reading so many scary things on internet... bladder issues, emotional issues, sexual. So scared of both surgery and being normal after. Never had major surgery.

I was afraid of those things too. I saw an old post here that said not to read too much of the post-surgery stuff because there are more complaints than stories of things going well.

One of my nurses had a non-surgical treatment. If I had gotten a myomectomy, I thought of watching them closely and trying one of these treatments if they grew back. But that was based only on my made up plan.

I hope all goes well!!!

Re: Myomectomy vs Hysterectomy

i had a few choices but in the end chose an LSH hysterectomy since i was 45, had 3 children and knew i didn't want more. i did choose to have only my uterus removed..keeping my healthy cervix and both ovaries. i did not want a vaginal cuff or any sexual issues. i'm completely happy with my choice and have no issues at all 15 years later. maybe that's something you can talk to your dr about.

Thank you. I will ask about that. That is all the stuff I am worried about. But they did talk about doing it laparoscopically I think. I did not retain a lot yesterday and I was by myself because I really thought I was just going to have a cyst or something minor.

if you want to keep your cervix, make sure to be specific. most lap hysterectomies and all vaginal hysterectomies remove it.

Re: Myomectomy vs Hysterectomy

Yes. Last Monday. The large fibroid kept growing and there was a third one of a decent size that showed up on the MRI that wasn't there in the late fall.

I accepted the possibility that more would grow later. I don't have any info about the success rate of other treatments with fast-growing fibroids. I started feeling pressure all the time, instead of when I ate something I shouldn't have. With the pressure, I didn't want to take a chance. I think I have a high tolerance for pain and started thinking that the pressure was more concerning than it felt.

There are good doctors in my area and it was difficult at first having this recommendation since it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

A second or third opinion may be helpful!!
