I haven't told my kids yet!
So I'm on the final stretch and I haven't told my kids yet! My oldest daughter (12) knows but my younger 3 (5-10) do not I'm nervous about telling them especially youngest she's very much a mommy's girl.
I'm going to be in the hospital for 3 nights and I'm going to be home for 8 weeks (which she will love I'm sure)
I just don't know how to approach the topic and I'm a cryer if she cries then I'll cry. My other 2 younger ones (9&10) will probably be just fine and very understanding.
What do I say and when is it best to tell them??

Re: I haven't told my kids yet!
Samerea,
My daughter is almost 7. Unfortunately she has had to spend several nights in the hospital herself for kidney problems. I did not try to explain what surgery I was having but we did talk about "mommy being sick". I think you know your own children best and just how much information they can understand and handle. I started about a week out from surgery date. She helped me clean and get my room ready with books and crafts to keep me busy. I had to report in at midnight the day of my surgery. I made sure to tuck her in that night and let her know that I would be at the hospital already when she woke up. We reassured her that Daddy would bring her to see me after she got home from school. She was fine with that and has been a gem this whole week post-op.
On a side note, we made the mistake of not checking with the hospital for the age of visitors on the ward. The only reason they let my daughter on the ward is because my husband was there to get me for my release.

Re: I haven't told my kids yet!
My TVH is scheduled for June 24th and I haven't told my kids yet either. All I've said is that I have some time off work over the summer.
What I'm planning on saying is something similar to "I have to have an operation, and I'll be in the hospital so the doctors can make sure that everything's okay, but I'll come home." Maybe play Hospital with your 3 year old and get some age appropriate books to share with her? (Check your local library)
And it sure is nice to see another Alberta girl on here - I'm in Southern Alberta!

Re: I haven't told my kids yet!
My advice is to reassure your children, and answer specifically WHO will take care of them. My 13 year old daughter wanted to know I would be alright, but she also wanted to know WHO would take care of her needs. I was so glad she asked, because I could reassure her that her Dad would take care of her and be there for her. She is my youngest and got braces the day after my surgery. She came to the hospital and proudly showed off her new braces. She didn't see me again until I came home the 3rd day. It has worked out great, and she's loved having me home after school the last two weeks.
