Just wondering if some of the restrictions are the same as far as sweeping, vacuuming and bending in general with tvh compared to an ah?

I've heard it said that "a hysterectomy is a hysterectomy is a hysterectomy. " Regardless of how you're having it done, you're still having an organ removed from your body, and multiple sets of blood vessels and connective tissues cut and sewn or cauterized, and you'll need to take it easy for at least 2 months to ensure proper healing. In fact, because vaginal procedures always involve the creation of a vaginal cuff after the cervix is removed, your restrictions will most likely be more stringent than for sisters like me who were able to keep their cervices, to allow for this area to heal properly. Just follow your surgeon's directions in this, and you'll be okay. Wishing you all the best for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Hi Jenl5 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

Tiger_Eye is correct. Having a hysterectomy is MAJOR SURGERY. No matter the type, you still have much internal healing to do. You need to think in terms of weeks and not days for recovery. You will need help with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. You will not be bedridden, but you will need to rest much. You will be able to do minor items around the house, but much will be left undone - like house cleaning. () You will take brief but frequent walks, as these help you heal. You will have lifting restrictions: 10 lbs for 6 weeks and 20 lbs for 8 weeks is common. A gallon of milk weights ~ 8.5 lbs. And note pushing and pulling restrictions are the same as lifting restrictions. Your driving restrictions will be about 2 weeks, maybe more.

BTW. My house did not get cleaned for 8 weeks. By the end, I was naming dust bunnies, and because we had 3 black cats at the time, my carpets were also black.

To a certain extent, hysterectomy recovery is an exercise in patience. Body trumps brain, which will go stir crazy. Recovery is not a contest, nor is it a race. It is more marathon than sprint. You need to follow all of your doctor's orders to the letter both pre-op and post-op, no additions, no subtractions. You only get one chance to heal right.

Just know that we are not alone in this. We will be by your side throughout this process.
