Migraines....keep ovaries??

I currently suffer from migraines, most are menstrual migraines. I currently miss at least 2 days of work a month due to migraine. My dr told me today that he will make the determination at my pre op next month wheather or not to keep my ovaries. Do any of you suffer from migraines and if so did removing your ovaries help your migraines any? My neuro has already added her 2 cents worth in and said my ovaries should go too since hrt is a lower dose of hormones than my body makes.

Re: Migraines....keep ovaries??

I don't suffer from migraines but in my opinion, I would agree with your neuro and remove your ovaries. The reason I say that is that I have learned that very often, women worry about their ovaries and whether or not to keep them, when in fact, they've atrophied. In other words, the blood supply has been cut off due to cysts or large fibroids or age so they are basically "dead" anyway, thereby serving no purpose.
In addition, keeping them allows for the fact that later in life you could get ovarian cancer, this is an opportunity to take that possibility out of the loop. My cousin is a gyn and feels that once you're in there taking everything out, take out the ovaries too. And my surgeon who was a specialist, didn't want to tell me to take out my ovaries (it's supposed to be our option as women and they know that women are sensitive to the issue so they beat around the bush) but once I told him I wanted to take them out, only then did he say he thought I was making the right decision. (And by the way, it turns out mine were atrophied so they weren't doing me any good anyway.)

Re: Migraines....keep ovaries??

I had horrible migraines before my surgery. Now, since my surgery I still get them, about once a week or once every two weeks, HOWEVER, they are not the migraines from...um,....well, a very bad place! ...My rescue meds work quickly and I am not usually incapacitated by them any more....it seems my headaches were not totally hormone related, but the worst ones were, I guess.

Re: Migraines....keep ovaries??

I've gotten menstrual migraines since I was a teenager. They can be incapacitating and last 2-4 days, but since I got a prescription for Relpax I've been able to manage them relatively well the last couple of years.

All three doctors I consulted with recommended keeping my ovaries. I'm super, super sensitive to any kind of hormonal birth control, so I'm scared to death of the way my body would react to HRT... and having as natural a menopause as possible is important to me. My internist did point out that I might still get the hormonal migraines if I keep my ovaries, but they should gradually get better over time. I told him I'd rather keep dealing with migraines than deal with HRT -- better the devil you know than the devil you don't, y'know?

Re: Migraines....keep ovaries??

My neurologist does not recommend removing the ovaries for women with hormonal migraines. He stated that the stats are actually higher that one will continue with hormone related migraines than not.

Instead, he worked with me to find a prophylactic medication that I took every single day to try to prevent migraines and it did help.

Have you talked to your GP about the topic? Have you gotten a second neurological opinion? Have you had a second gynecological opinion? I suggest all of those before your pre op appointment.
