Fibroids - Knew this Day would Come
Hello – I am new to this forum and would like some advice and, perhaps, some morale support. I am 50 and years ago I was diagnosed with a small fibroid. My doctor (who was wonderful) took a ‘wait and see’ approach and I visited him regularly to keep tabs its growth. Since then I moved and when I went to see a new OB/GYN, the ultrasound came back and my fibroid is now 12 weeks. During the last year, my periods have been heavy for about 2 days and then taper off dramatically. Of course, I make more visits to the bathroom and I don’t seem to have much reserve energy and I’ve recently began to experience having trouble getting a good nights sleep. I wrote off the lethargy to the stress of the job and my 2 hour commute (one way). My doctor tells me that I am not a candidate for the new procedures due to the size of the fibroid and my age. She is also concerned that she cannot see my ovaries. I have no sentimental reasons for keeping my uterus but I was hoping to make it to menopause in the hope that the fibroid will shrink ‘naturally’. My next appointment is in October; I’ve read the literature and it appears that I have a decision to make on whether or not to have a complete hysterectomy. In point of fact, I am terrified of the surgery. My apologies for rambling but this is the first time that I’ve had an opportunity to communicate my concerns with those who can understand my concerns and fears. Many thanks.

Fibroids - Knew this Day would Come
Hi SafeOne, and
It sounds like my circumstances were similar to yours. Three-plus years ago, at the age of 50, I had a TAH/BSO due to an enlarged fibroid uterus that was impacting my quality of life in a negative manner. I'll spare you the details; if you want to read more about it click here.
I hope you will take some time to explore the Hystersisters site and read, read read. There may be other possible remedies for the symptoms you describe, other than a hysterectectomy. You owe it to yourself to be informed in this regard.
Whatever you decide to do, I'm sending Best Wishes and many s your way!

Fibroids - Knew this Day would Come
Hi SafeOne,
If you pursue the avenue of a hyst, possibly you are a candidate for a less invasive hyst such as a LAVH or a LSH, both laparoscopic hysts or a TVH, a vaginal hyst??
My 1st Dr. wanted to do a TAH (Total Abdominal Hyst) due to the size of my two large fibroids. I was sitting at about 10-12 weeks in size. I had bladder incontinence all the time and I was extremely tired. I just attributed it to being in my mid-40's.
I decided to get a 2nd opinion and he suggested a LSH after I did (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my fibroids enough for surgery. Lupron causes temporary chemical menopause and in most cases it helps to temporarily decrease estrogen in the body. The fuel maker for fibroids.
With my LSH, I only had my uterus removed. I was 46 at the time of my hyst and in talks with my Dr., I decided I wanted to keep my ovaries ( and cervix) since they were healthy and ovarian cancer does not run in my family. Also, ~newer~ studies are showing that the ovaries secrete important hormones well into menopause.
Here is a Hyster Sisters link that goes over the different -types of hysts- and questions to ask your Dr. in deciding what to do:

Best wishes. Don't worry. You will make the right choice for yourself. I am 2 yrs. post op and I am still very pleased with the choice I made.

Have you had a chance to read through the Fibroid Section of our resource database? You may find some helpful information that will help you with your decision.
I do agree it is a great idea to have more than one opinion before scheduling surgery, to insure you are treated with the best care for you!

Thank you all for relating your experiences. My next appointment is in October and will discuss with Dr. on what options are available.
Ironically, I did not have a period this month so perhaps menopause has finally kicked in. I am hoping that I won't have any more and maybe that will help with the situation or give me more options.
