op date is closer and feeling mixed feelings :(

well i am nearly there i had my pre-op appointment last monday and have my surgery on tues 8th.
i am feeling a mixture of emotion i sound silly but it was when the nurse was telling me about what to expect when i come round from the op i am fine with the whole pain thing but when she started talking about laproscopic may not be able to done and i could end up having open surgery and i'll have a drain and a catheter i started to have a anxiety attack i am one of these people if its happening to someone else i can hear all the details but when its me being he patient i like the saying ignorance is bliss, i sound silly dont i??
i am also feelin sad as i though i would only be in hospital for 48hrs as this was what my consultant had said but now its 5-7 days my son is nearly 8months old now and he will be staying with family as is my 7 yr old daughter i am going to find it really hard not bein able to pick my son up and cuddle him and i am panicing abt recovery time etc
i still want the procedure its just then recovery part i am worried about

Re: op date is closer and feeling mixed feelings :(

First, relax. You can still cuddle a baby. You just need to be sitting down when you do it. I was holding a baby on Sunday at church and let me tell you it was as natural as before. i couldn't stand up and walk around with it, but as long as someone handed it to me and took it from me I got to cuddle someone's baby. So please don't think that you can't cuddle your son. You can. You might not be as comfortable but you still can!!! A pillow will become your best friend. Picking up a baby is a different story so you will need help. So enlist help.

You will have a catheter regardless. So don't panic there. That is just the nature of surgery like this. So it doesn't matter if you're open or laparoscopic. You're getting a catheter. I had surgery at 7am on Friday, I went home around 7pm on Saturday.

Not sure about the drain as I've never had one with any of my surgeries...

Don't panic. There is no reason to. Plan for worst case and hope for best case. Chances are best case will happen. Odds are you'll get something in between.

They just have to tell you all of the possible complications for legal reasons before you sign consent. Any complication could occur but the odds are that they won't. A hysterectomy is actually one of the safer surgeries you can have. It's just not without risk.
The catheter didn't bother me, I barely noticed it and it didn't hurt when they took it out. You may also notice some pain in your throat as they have to put the breathing tube down your throat for the surgery as the anesthesia can make your lungs very inefficient. But it is inserted and then taken out while you are still asleep, and the throat pain for me was not that bad.
The post-op pain is usually not as bad after the first few days, many women are able to get by with OTC pain meds. I've had virtually no pain after 1 week, my arthritis is way worse. In fact, after the first day, the worst pain was the gas they inject in the abdomen to make it easier to see and work, and the pains of my intestines beginning to work. Some people, like me, also get bladder spasms due to the catheter. But really, it only lasts a week or so and believe me, it was worth it because overall I feel better and have less pain

yep I have bladder spasms. I got them at about day 5 and still have them, but doctor is treating them with medicine. I had a lot of work done around my bladder though and it just isn't happy with me. most of my pain is associated with that.

Yes they do have to tell you all the scenarios so more likely than not you will have the type of surgery that they told you. They just want you to be prepared in case there is a surprise. I decided while I knew the other scenarios I would ignore people when each Dr or nurse mentioned alternatives from my davinci procedure. I had exactly what I anticipated. so concentrated on the good.
