Had a complete abdominal hysterectomy on april 1st. I had it because of growing fibroids after menopause and pain and pressure with intercourse. I chose an epidural for pain control post op and was very satisfied. It was in for 48 hours and I was discharged on Lortab and advil 3 days post op. I never did take the Lortab at home as it makes me nauseated. Tips pre surgery: Get your girlfriends lined up to help out with meals errands etc. I always hesitate to ask for help but your recovery will go better if you take it easy that first week especially. Buy thankyou notes ahead of time and plenty of stamps--you'll be surprised all the folks who will be there for you. Take stool softners 3 times a day (self explanatory). During your first post op days drink plenty of water, move those legs around in bed, get out of bed as soon as you can, walk down those halls--keeps the gas from building up. Diet wise I did not drink carbonated beverages, stuck to tea and plain hot water, ate frequently in small amts . I used the binder that the hospital gave me until I went home, then I switched to a panty girdle which was a lot more comfortable. I wore a pair of slippery silk lounge pants to bed. They made it a lot easier to manuver around the bed (ie get in and out )by sliding with less friction. Put a stable step stool next to your bed as kind of a half way platform to rest your feet. Good luck!!!
